I don't follow AFL but I'm rugby league mad. The afl and nrl have a host of indigenous players that don't get booed Yes I think that
A lot have people have probably been at a game and followed other people booing. Like on the first day of the ashes in Brisbane everybody started singing "broad is a wan**r " because of his refusal to walk when he blatantly edged it to first slip. Daly cherry Evans was booed every time he got the ball when he played in Brisbane after he reneged last minute on a deal to join the Gold Coast to pump up his manly deal. Paul Gallen is booed every time he plays in Queensland just as we booed Benny Elias cause he got under our skin and because he was a good player, and how Wally Lewis was booed in NSW because he was a threat and a Queenslander . These were not anything to do with racism and my opinion is that Adam is booed because he is not generally well received. Yes there are a minority of racists that do spoil things but I reckon a lot of people generally don't like the fella & the rest are getting on the booing band wagon because now they are being told not to like when your mum said not to touch that so you did

I don't like booing in any form . Never have . Disrespectful . But for the first time in my life I'm thinking of going to an AFL match . Just to boo this whinger . This is a can of worms . If you vote yes you will be labelled as a right wing racist redneck . If you vote no you'll be a PC lefty bludger . Goodes like Mundine is exceptionally good at his chosen field of endeavour . But they both love to play the race card . So Goodsy how does it feel to be the second most hated sportsman in Australian history . Julia Gillard loved to play the misoginist card when ever she stuffed up and became the most hated politician in Aus history . Suck it up , take a spoonful of concrete and harden the f*#€ up , or go and play soccer and keep taking dives .
I drink with gay blokes that have a thicker skin than this goose .
Oh and Goodsy , if your feeling like you've been vilified or hard done by , or you might feel like an oppressed minority feel free to pay back the hundreds of thousands of dollars you have earned from playing the WHITE MAN's game .

He's lucky. Some people I know get sworn at, spat at, pissed on, shite thrown at them, used tampons chucked at them, breast milk squirted at them, weapons thrown and fired at them, rocks chucked at them and called such lovely names including the supposedly non-racist "you fuc*&n white dog cu^t". They don't get paid millions of dollars for a couple of years providing entertainment to the masses. Get over it and play footy you big, ugly cry baby.

NTP, to answer your question - When does sport become political?

Never in my opinion, as an AFL and Eagle supporter I am amazed the hype this has been given this week. Sure he was given more than usual - but what I've read from supporters at the game, there were 2 Off the ball / rough play incidents during the game he did, that resulted in the crowds reaction - which he is renound for
There have always been villains in all codes of sport - we love to hate them and give them grief at the games when we go - they all accept it as part and parcel of playing the sport.
WE Eagles boo every time Ballentine (Freo) gets near the ball, sure he a great player/dirty at times (A modern day Tony Liberatore of Western Bulldogs) - we all love to hate them
I Was even in Melbourne for the indigenous round with my sons Junior footy club at Ethaid stadium - watching one particular player being booed all the time, first time playing for his new team against his old team at home.
The players realise they not going to be "loved" by fans all the time, especially by their on ground antics - so Goodes should toughen up,but heh he at the end of his career, milking an extra year contact $$$ and going out being remembered
Wearing a bit thin - the race card he using to excuse his actions on the field
and sad for both sides of the fence jumping on the media wagon this week
jUst read tonight Anderson out for England for this game and the 4th cricket test - booooo (must be racist against the Poms)
Enjoy your sport and leave the politics to Canberra
          Cheers kim

          PS as per Wikipedia

Goodes was born in South Australia, to Lisa May and Graham Goodes, with siblings Jake and Brett.[4] Goodes' father is of English, Irish and Scottish ancestry; his mother is an Indigenous Australian (Adnyamathanha and Narungga).[5][6]

Goodes' parents were separated when he was four; his father moved to Queensland while Goodes moved between Wallaroo and Adelaide (in South Australia) and Merbein (in Victoria) with his mother.[7]

Perhaps we should say sorry to his other half of ancestry he not acknowledging in the media

My simple view is this. Sport should not be used as a political vehicle.

Professional sport relies on its fan base. Professionall players are entertainers insofar that people pay to see they amazing skills and performance. Without spectators, there is no Professional sport.

If a player thinks they are bigger than their sport or the game, there is a problem. If a player does an act to provoke a response, it's disingenuous or incredulous to then react when an equally provocative response is returned.

It is dangerous and disappointing for a sport to alienate/suggest its entire spectator (support) base through a very provocative stereotype description. It's even worse to suggest that spectators cannot "boo" a player, official or an on field incident to express their displeasure. To use a 21st Century analogy, is the use of a 'thumbs down' online symbol (emoji) unacceptable too?

I love AFL. I also passionately love Australia's Aboriginal heritage and culture, and lament that we (as Australians) do not celebrate this more at sporting events (like the NZ Hakka). I support and would like to see more special celebrations by players following on-field success. But such celebration, in my view, should be just that. A celebration should not be an antagonistic, provocative and devisive act. By way of similar example, the Hakka should not include the 'thread cutting' gesture.

It is also a bit rich when the most recent event is being singled out. Who remembers when Kevin Sheedy was sanctioned for his 'throat cutting' gesture? There any many other previous examples.

For a player to figuratively cross the player/spectator boundary by deliberately making a provocative 'spear throwing gesture' towards the crowd during a match is unacceptable. While I don't condone certain responses to this act, I do however support the right of spectators to express their displeasure in a reasonable fashion that has been the hallmark of sporting events from the days of the Colloseum to today by giving a 'thumbs down' through booing.

Without spectators and fans there is no professional sport. Passion, emotion and spectator loyalty drives professional sport. It's the spectators who pay money to watch the games that results in the professional players receiving their massive salaries and becoming sporting celebrities.

Sport shouldn't be political. Sporting codes and its players should not attack their supporter/fan base. Players should focus on the game and 'keep it on the field'.

The present situation also forgets all the many other examples where spectators express displeasure at against officials, against the opposition, against on-field decisions, against acts that are contrary to the rules (i.e. high or dangerous tackles), against VIPs who attend events, etc.

I hope reason and commonsense prevails in the current situation and debate, and everyone simply gets on with the game.

                  My 2 cents.

Well written mate. I wear a badge having a red "R" and I'm a special administrator. Some may understand what both these things mean. I have a lot of respect for some aboriginals, just like I do some white fellas. Not liking some black fellas or some white fellas has NIL to do with racism or who I can and cannot Boo. And yes, I would love to boo Goodes just as he may wish to do the same to me.

I don't have a problem with Goodes or his colleagues celebrating their heritage with their spear throwing antics . Just as long as they don't mind me celebrating my Anglo European heritage . Which is the levelling of a rifle and the pulling of the trigger .
