  • Windows 10

I have just loaded Windows 10 onto my laptop. - Don't do it unless you have carefully investigated the amount of spyware that comes with it. Don't just take the default settings or you will give Microsoft all you ever knew + some more. Contact details and the lot.

Anyway it comes with a new replacement for internet explorer - Microsoft Edge. When I used it on Pradopoint it couldn't reply to posts. If you want to post use Chrome or Firefox.

My impression is that its faster than Win 7 but the spyware bothers me. I think I have turned it all off now, assuming you can trust the settings.

I made the mistake of signing up for the early upgrade. After downloading the files I had second thoughts and ticked "Don't accept" on the license agreement. It stopped the install, but then every 5 min it started the download again and asked me to accept the license. In the end I just gave up and accepted it.

    Be careful.

Had two computers give me a lot of hassel at work today. Ordered two new ones and told comp man to get windows 10 as we have win 7. I did not want the hassel of getting 7, then having to update in a few years.
I will tell him to just load basics and make it very private use, it will be the business version if they have that.
    Time will tell.
    Cheers

Right click on Edge and you can open as Internet Explorer..

Used google, Siri, iPhone, android, Facebook, twitter,? Shopped at a department store recently?Your data has all been hoovered up already and they know all about you

A lot has been made of MS using BitTorrent to send data around with windows 10. They forget that MS invented Torerents/p2p back when they were going to 'own' the digital lounge as an effective way of delivering video files until they realised it would kill TV.

Work in IT. Been running the beta 10 for months now. Did the upgrade on main home PC. Guys at work are doing it as well.

I might do it next week, but will see. Office 2016 and Server 2016 just around the corner.

I installed it on my laptop. I think it's created a problem with my techstream program as it keeps cutting out. System restore to get rid of W10?

              Running fine here.
Just turn off the data collection. Just used to tailor ads mostly anyway.
Much better to use than Windows 8, looks pretty much like the Windows 7 desktop on a PC.

                No,No,No,No,Yes and No

I have also turned off all the spyware on my Android.

Unfortunately I just need a contact to use WIn 10 and it all goes that way. I realise I probably can't win, but will try to make it hard for them.

For those worried about the privacy settings etc. Here's a fairly hysteria free, non techie look at it and instructions on what to do:

For me advertising ID and the get to know you feature are probably the most worrisome.

The only way you'll stop them getting your data is by not using the internet..

I read an interesting report a few weeks back as to why Windows are offering 10 for free.
Apparently whatever replaces windows 10 is going to be a subscription based operating system similar to their 365 products - and in the terms and conditions of windows 10 it has the power to automatically roll you straight into the new operating system......

But as to data collection......you would be extremely surprised what Google already know on you.
Anyone who has used google analytics to track usage of their websites will know how much data you can get on a user!

Wouldn't surprise me! One of the better ways of stopping piracy as you wouldn't be receive updates without downloading it all over again. With that... windows could then counteract each new way that they bypass the authorisation forcing then to make a new bypass... much like Apple ios and jailbreaks

Yeah I can't remember where I read it now, but from memory it was a reputable tech site linked from news.com.au

Realistically its a better way to purchase genuine software than the old way of getting windows or office products - not a lot of people can justify spending a grand on software in one hit, if you can absorb the cost over an unlimited timeframe with unlimited support & updates then its not that bad.
We all think we shouldn't pay for it, but how much usage do we realistically get out of software - our computers would be useless without an operating system!

Pirating Game of Thrones however is a whole new kettle of fish.....

I'm happy to use open office, and still use Office 2003. It works remarkably well.
Why should we need to keep paying money to the big end of town?

If Microsoft try that on I will shift to Ubantu or similar OS
