  • Re: Things that tick you off!

The new passport conditions for young children are absolutely rediculous!!! I just finished my passport interview for me and my two kids this afternoon and only my application was accepted. My sons (18 month old) had his rejected because the photo is narginally under size, what the government wants for a babies photo is ludicrous and obviously the conditions were written by someone who either has no kids or has nothing to do with their kids. Try getting a child from birth up to age 3 to sit on a stool not move their head, not have any facial expression, eyes focused straight ahead and keep their mouths closed. Then if your lucky enough to get your child to meet those conditions then you rely on the photographer to produce the correct image, not too dark, not too light, no shadows across the face, no shadow behind the head, head perfectly centered, have to see both ears head cannot be slightly turned, and image has to meet the sizing chart. Bugger me! We got my sons photo just right but marginally undersize by about 1/4 of a millimetre and the Post Office interviewer rejected it and told me to reschedule with new photos.

So off I go back to the camera store and told them what occured and he goes off the deep end and says nope he would not redo the photo and gave me my money back. Well that is just great so I go back to the P.O. and tell them the photo store wont redo the photo. The P.O. say tough luck, I say will you do it here and the P.O. says no they wont do passport photos of young children cause it is too hard. They tell me to try another camera store but the store I just used had already told me that no other store will touch young childrens passport photos.

Anyway on the off chance I went to the only other camera store that I knew might take young childresn passport photos and they have agreed to try tomorrow but failing that I will have to try it myself and see how I go.

However these rules are just absolutely ludicrous in the extreme. God knows how someone with a 12 month old or below could possibly meet these requirements, once upon a time a young child was just attached to the parents passport but this is no longer allowed.

Oh and my daughter was knocked back on her aplication because they do not accept the comemorative birth certificates even though they are a legal document. So now we have to either get a new extract from BDM or somehow find the original extract which has been missing for sometime now.

Mav, did I type this or you :? :? :?

This week we turned up to our Passport interview at 9:50am for a 10am interview... we start straight away with mine first and all's well as mine is just a renewal with no name changes.
Then we move onto Zowie's (wife). She needs a name change and it's almost expired so we change the whole thing.
First she rejects the photo (I took it and it's exactly as shown on the passport website  ) she said the glasses were under the eyebrow which is considered cutting through the eye  Re-checked the website when I got home and it's shown exactly how I took the shot :x
Then... marriage cert. to show name change... not good enough. We brought the commemorative one also
Now we move to Lorelai's application.
Our photo guarantor made a mistake and didn't initial his correction so that null and voids that application

Get to the end of all that... I ask, so, do we need to make another appointment? Nah, just turn up between 9 and 4

p.s. .... if you're in the area and need a passport shot... give me a call
      Here's Lorelai's
      Cheers, Leon

        Guys,
I know this is really frustrating stuff...... but having worked in a job for many years where I was responsible for pulling kids off international departures, and now, with a sister in-law who has lost her kids in a marrige split with an overseas husband...... these very tedious requirements are designed to stop kids leaving the country that aren't ment to.......... for a little bit of inconvieniance, hopefully we are stopping what were a frightening number of kids being taken out of Oz, without one partners permission.

It still does not hold water though cause the passport is valid for the child for a period of 5 years and there is no way that anyone could recognise a 5 year old from a passport photo taken when they were 1 month old.

Even if it was only valid for 2 years you still could not recognise a 2 year old from a 1 month old's photo.

They could certainly relax the criteria for the photo imo for young children, really who can get their 2 year old or under to sit still, remain expressionless with their mouth closed and look straight ahead? It is nigh on impossible.

Absolutley agree Mav, but its still a huge improvement on the old system of kids travelling under the partents passport. You have no idea of the pain in telling a mum or dad that their ex partner has just departed the country with their kids.....

We have a Macauley Clan gathering in Lake Tekapo, NZ in February to attend so we are going to make a bit of a holiday of it and stay from the 25th of Feb thru till the 06 March. Really looking forward to it but the BS we have to go through to get these passports is extremely frustrating to say the least.

If you have Photoshop or elements or any program that allows you to crop it's really easy.

Just shoot a little loose then crop it before you print it.
