Just been away for a few days, spoke to an owner of a 100 series cruiser who had a Toyota alloy bar fitted to his vehicle.

He hit an emu at speed, the emu bounced under his cruiser and he was off the road for 5 days, with the damage caused to the bar and underneath of the vehicle. He now has a TJM bar fitted.

While it is not a good thing to hit a pedestrian, more pedestrians are at fault than the vehicle drivers, and in most cases, the pedestrian suffers some sort of injury. A solid bar will cause injury, but so will any vehicle without a bar attached.

I would rather a solid steel bar (have a TJM steel) for outback and country travel, rather than no bar or some plastic bar that would only deflect a couple of galahs.

Everybody is entitled to his own opinion, and I'm sticking with a steel one for occupant protection, either from animal strike or collision with another vehicle. If some of you want to use a plastic bar, then fit one, but don't tell others they cannot fit a steel or alloy one.

Jasen, couldn't be bothered multi quoting so take it as read I am referring to your posts about anti revenue devices.

Can I have the transcript from the Magistrate after you get caught?

And I used to tell people the same thing when I was in WA but I can tell you one thing my little beeping box saved my licence on many occasions. Rule one when it goes ping, beep or whatever mash both feet on the brake pedal! On one occasion I wasn't quick enough and the party lights illuminated so I pulled over. "Sir do you know what speed we recorded you doing?" "Officer I can put my hand on my heart and honestly say I have no idea" "9km/h over the limit and this IS a dirt road" "Sorry wont happen again", $50 or $90 fine and no points, it was a while ago. I had just run out of 4th gear and was changing into 5th when the warning sounded. There is a statute of limitations on admissions like this? Isn't there?

I seem to remember a crash test a couple of years ago featured in 4WD Action, the Smart Bar came off worse than the others in protecting that all important radiator area. Not such a big deal in the cities but can be fatal if stranded a thosand kays from help.

Yes I've got the mag here but too lazy to dig it out among all the other 50 or so. What number is it Jasen?

It's issue no. 150 page 45. They never put the month or year. The bar is not all plastic but has a "huge steel reinforcement at the back." You're right, it got a good review but the TJM and Arb came in 1st and 2nd.

              Cheers Jim

Comparing the departure angle in front of the wheels is also very useful and would be a factor in me choosing a bar, but thats not my understanding of how the indudtry measures the angle.

The overall approach angle is only one measurement, the approach angle in front of the wheel is also important, think about where you place your wheels on the tracks and then check the rest of the vehicle to see where the high points are. a degreee or 2 in the middle of the vehicle is not a big deal if you gain a lot in front of the wheels.

What sort of airbag jack uses high pressure air to inflate? I thought they used exhaust gas.
