  • Travelling with kids

Just did a 8 month trip with my 2 y.o and 4 y.o. and they had a ball. Remember to keep the k's down to around 300km a day, and visit some playgrounds and they are happy as can be. Oh...... one of those portable in car DVD players does also help. Any queries let me know.

    Re: Travelling with kids

We have three kids and find that a mix of portable DVD players, Nintendo DS and other things (activity and reading books plus regular snacks), as well as planning your stops and allowing your kids a reasonable time to spend some of their saved energy after sitting still for a few hours does wonders. We recently travelled to Broome and back (1800km over 2 days each way) with no dramas at all. I generally like to depart early so that the first couple of hours while the kids are still sleeping. Stop when they wake up, stretch the legs, grab a coffee and some quick breakfast, and then back on the road until around lunchtime. Have a good break for lunch before final leg until the afternoon. Hopefully arrive early enough to allow time to unpack, settle in and maybe do something before getting dinner sorted. No problems at all. 8)

I can't remember how I put up with these types of trips when I was a kid. Back in those days we travelled in the back of an enclosed ute, no aircon, and few extras. Maybe it was the carbon monoxide!!! :|

ps. Don't forget to update your location in your profile... so everyone knows where you are from.

      Re: Travelling with kids

haha handy post, Will be doing the West East trip and back, first trip with the two eldest kids, the mrs and bub are flying over prior to us going. Second trip back the mrs and the 3 kids with us, now that will be fun, not ! haha.. Seriously though looking forward to it. The girls will have a bench seat each to stretch out and chill out whilst dad drives his new toy. Coming back may be a little cramped, but regular stops is the key yes. Hopefully should have the sticker by then, so Honk if ya see the red.......

            haha!!! that's a classic!

my 10yo gets grumpy when little brother (7) uses him as a pillow, but then falls asleep and we get a similar scene. Haven't taken a photo though, will have to!

When 4wd'ing, the kids in the back often get a little sea sick  .

So strongly recommend carrying some of these:

                Re: Travelling with kids

                we travel with four kids.
one trick we found was for them to make up their own ration packs for the day.
They soon learnt to control their intake and it stopped the "I wanna's"
Definately avoid roadhouse food, homemade sausage rolls at a scenic spot saves heaps of money and the turn around time back on the road is a lot quicker

                  Re: Travelling with kids

Great advice guys, breaks and entertainment. Recently we went from Brisbane to Rocky and lucky the kids slept for almost the first half of the trip and after the break it was DVD time. I think I need the overhead screen as the young on behind me was leaning over to look at the head unit screen.

                    Re: Travelling with kids

on our latest trip we have given the older two boys thir own GPS Navigator and digital cameras. They were responsible for making sure we were on track and on time. They did really well at it until I noticed the nintendos were getting to much interest and took a 'wrong' turn  , half an hour later they noticed and had to work out an alturnate route to bring us on line again so they learnt to keep a weather eye on whats going on around them and an interest in the surrounds.
