  • Lost in the outback...

I enjoyed reading http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/los ... 63553.html earlier - it reminds me of an episode of Man vs Wild (perhaps Man and Dog vs Wild ?)

I can't help but picture him shooing away the rescuers cos he's enjoying himself so much. Seriously though, it must have been a bit worrying for him but at least the weather was on his side.

Maybe we can get him to upload pictures of his rig-'un' build

When I read the story today I thought it must have been a really crappy 4WD and if it wasn't it is now.

        Re: Lost in the outback...

One wonders why anybody would wander off in to the bush on his own, without adequate communications - mobile + uhf + satphone + epirb.
Was up in NT recently working remote and we were supplied with uhf, mobile and satphone.
At least he stuck by the vehicle and had some survival skills.
Thank god he was catching fish to eat - the labrador would have started looking pretty good to him after a few days - or vice versa.
        Very lucky boy, and dog.

          Re: Lost in the outback...

The fact is he went off fishing for the day. I reckon MOST of us have been somewhere in the bush for a day without taking epirb, satphone etc.
Personally i think that while these things are great in the right hands, they give people too much security and don't make people want to learn about bush survival.
There must be dozens of people out there relying on them, and they could stuff up just as easily as his 4WD did.
Instead of bagging him I reckon he should get all the praise we can give him - it's a good example of someone using their head.

            Not bagging him.
He has skills and no doubt experience and nous, which he used, to his credit, and good fortune.
Could have ended earlier if he'd had the right gear tho'.

Ditto. But he wasn't just in the bush, he was in a very remote part of Australia well away from anywhere including civilisation, by himself (except dog) and with no back-up safety systems or comms... and way away from where anybody actually thought he would be. Sure, his 'skills' appear to have helped keep him alive - and credit to him for that... but it certainly could have been a different outcome. In addition, his errors of judgement also cost society a few dollars for the search that was undertaken to try and find him.

We all make mistakes, true... but this was a serious error of judgement that luckily for him had a reasonable ending. My point is that if you ever venture out into a remote part of Australia by 4wd, whether you think you are only going for a few k's or even a few hours, you need to have an emergency plan and safety equipment for the unexpected. Mav's short 'night expedition' thread clearly demonstrates that.

There's some pretty good secret and remote fishing spots around, but none is that good that its worth risking your life!

                Two perish in NT Outback

Sad examples of why you should never travel in the outback unprepared, always carry plenty of water (always!), never leave your vehicle when broken down despite the urge to walk to safety ... and carry an EPIRB for when everything else fails!

Met a Japanese couple crossing the Simpson at Purni Bore
They had a ordinary road map with Oodnadatta, Dalhousie and Birdsville highlighted.
In a little Suzuki Jimmy and supplies in the back did not reach the bottom of the widows
Rice doesn't take up much space!!
We met other 4X4 travellers on the track that had to help them out of sand bogs, given them directions and supplied them with more water :x

Then they go home and tell everone how they crossed the AUSTRALIAN SIMPSOM DESERT

If it was not for the help of others :?:

What our stupid prospector (indigenous) 52yr old that got lost north of Coolgardie. 39 degrees and all he was wearing was shorts, a T-shirt and THONGS!

Lost his detector after bashing through the scrub for 36hrs. No water, no food, no nav gear, no matches - NO BLOODY COMMON SENSE! Reckons he drank his own pee to survive.

His dopey mate only had a 2 wheel drive sedan and couldn't go looking for him. They were 6km off the "main" Coolgardie North Rd (a haul road mostly).

                      He was from Esperance too!
