  • '3' mobile internet - opinions?

I'm organising my father a new computer with a mobile broardband internet connection. He is in a complex where he can't be connected by land line - so mobile seems to be the way. He is outskirts of the Perth CBD - say 5 kms away - so reception won't be a problem. He won't be travelling - so coverage is also not an issue.

My question is has anyone tried the '3' mobile internet connection. Seems extremely cheap compared to Telstra/Optus. What are peoples opinions about connectivity, email facilities, speed etc?

Tried 3 once years ago, total crap. Not sure about now as I have been with Next G for quite a while.

I have BigPond NextG (provided by work) works everywhere and good speed. The USB modem/dongle also came with an external antenna, which is great for fringe reception areas in the bush.

Got to give NextG a tick, it seems to provide the best overall reception, they own most of the system.

As the connection wilby sedentary and in a high population area (assumed better coverage), you maybe right with coverage with another carrier.

Most of the other carriers are only re-named. For best deals and a comparo try :

Had three mobile internet, mainly used at home - i did not have a landline and just used a mobile phone. Worked ok, around 500kbps (40-50kB/sec) D/L but for some reason it just stopped browsing one day (still connected ok). Worked when i tried it at work, just no browsing in my suburb. Had a month long shit fight with three, they argued it was working coz they saw 50kb of data d/l for the month...eventually after 6 weeks of it not working i managed to terminate the contract (they were ever so nice and waived the exit charges  )

          Go with bigpond...

I have Next G with Telstra provided by my employer and works pretty good. Be aware that even though you are in a metro area double and triple check that you will be on the "3" network because if you have to connect or "roam" on the Telstra network you will pay big time.

I use the three mobile broadband and so does my old man and my gf and all work perfectly. We live in the brisbane suburbs but hav taken it to cairns (worked but had to roam, no more expensive though, just slower).

I'd recommend it to anyone especially for the price, also ive had it for just on 10months.

              Cheers,

After i signed up with them their tele-marketers kept hassling me to sign up :!:  WTF :?: Every few days i would get a call offering great rates, free phones blahblahblah, could not shake them off  Absolutely lost the plot with them and told them i would be billing them for wasting my time. Swore never to go back.

I have used '3' mobile broadband for about 10 months or so, i highly recommend it. No dropouts, good download speed for a usb modem. I am on the Gold Coast.

Re: '3' mobile internet - opinions?

I have 3 mob internet. Living on a property indefinately so we got it to use as our net and our "home" phone. We paid a year subscription with skype which gives us a number, unlimited STD landline calls etc etc.
It's pretty good for general browsing but gets a little annoying when looking at Youtube etc as it switches from high speed to low speed soon after the downloading has started. This is probably due to the fact that we're not technically in a "3" zone (My mobile worked so I guessed it would be fine). I can't really complain as I got it as a $29 cap for $19 6Gb/month. We use approx 5Gb so it suits us fine. If there's any major downloading to do, Uni has extremely fast and unlimited downloading for students    I'm yet to try it in a "true" "3" high speed zone but imagine it would be fine.

Re: '3' mobile internet - opinions?

I had '3' mobile and in the metro areas it was OK. The real downside is that when you roam outside if the 3 zones (mostly metro areas and major roads) you pay exhorbitant rates for data. Roaming charges are not included in your monthly cap (this may have changed, but I doubt it).

I have since switched to Telstra NextG where I get 5Gb for $89 per month. It works everywhere. It is however expensive, and you have to deal with Telstra, but from experience, no phone company is any better for customer service than any other, they are all equally crap at service. You can however usually rely on Telstra to stuff things up and rebate you. :-)

I also tried Vodafone, and that was complete rubbish, even in the CBD.

Until you leave, then they will annoy you weekly with telemarketing and promise they will bend over backwards to get you back on the books

I have found they stop calling if you talk like you're a regular on the UHF in the city
