  • Quick tyre inflation

Possibly should have put this into the 'Campfire' section - but does anyone actually think that in an emergency when you can't get the bead seated due to too slow inflation rate - this could be an alternative. :?:

    IN AN EMERGENCY!!!!

I don't hink this has been posted before.

Hopefully this is the way to post a video when I can't get it into Utube. Sorry if I have stuffed up with this. No problems if moderators delete this...

    Re: Quick tyre inflation

I first saw this about 20 years or so ago on an edition of Top Gear (the older format) - it was about extreme offroading in Iceland. In fact, I think one of the crew does it on the Top Gear polar special as well. I guess the sudden heating expands the tyre outwards and pulls the bead to just inside the rim - then you air up quickly before the tyre realises what's happened... :?:

I think the usual disclaimers would have to go along with this approach...you can probably recognise the people that have tried this though...they're the ones without eyebrows

      Ummm.... NO :!: :!:

Once, when I was a young and silly apprentice, a work mate and I did this with a tyre off his Datsun and a can of areo start. You know what happened? He spent a couple of hours at the work-health clinic getting grit fished out of his eyes.

Also an uncontrolled explosive inflation like that could do all sorts of hidden damage to inside of the tyre walls.

When i was in the RAAF a guy lost his legs because a compromised tyre exploded while he was inflating it.

There is not one 4wd club, organisation, magazine or off road training course that would endorse this method.

Assuming no damage to the rim, you can always get the tyre back on the bead with a half decent compressor and a bit of perseverance. Try a ratchet strap tightened around the outside and some soapy water to help to pop on.

If you are having trouble on a regular basis then consider adding an air receiver to your compressor system to give yourself a short surge of compressed air reseat the bead.

Or add a hose set up to your kit that can allow another (good) tyre to be used as an air receiver.

There are plenety of safe alternatives to getting a tyre to reseal. Safety first people!!

Heh yeah I saw this video a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty extreme. If you're stuck though, stupidly, without the necessary gear to get the tyre reseated, could this be a "get out of jail" method. Ok so it might damage the tyre and is a dangerous way of going about it. But if you were stuck in the desert with no gear, stupidly, could you do this with any success as a last ditch effort to get going again? Putting aside the fact that no-one with a brain would go into the desert under-prepared.

I think you answered you own questions.... it would be a stupid thing to do by someone who has got themselves in a bad situation by being stupid.

Buy an air compressor, practice at home, be prepared. Get trained by someone who knows what their doing.

It might sound like a good "get out of jail method" but things could still get a lot worse if it goes bang and you are lying there bleeding or burnt and the vehicle is still not mobile.

Ok sure and I know exactly where you are coming from and it's good advice.

I suppose what I'm saying is this. You're in the desert. You've got no supplies. You were stupid. You need to reseat a tyre to get going. You don't have the equipment you really should have. Put aside the fact that you really shouldn't be in that situation in the first place for the moment.

If you don't do something you will be in a lot of trouble. Should you not try this as a last roll of the dice because it is too dangerous? A slow death under the desert sun or a shot at this method?

If it was me I'd give it a shot. You might end up dead or you might end up dead....... what do you have to lose?

Ok, you have me against a wall... if it's a life and death choice then I guess you need to consider it.

Mind you if it's life and death you'd do anything... I'd drive on 4 flats or even rims if I had too. Your lifes worth more than tyres or rims... or the whole vehicle for that matter.

Personally I'd stuff the tyre with spinifex and drive it out flat if it came down to it.

I guess my opinion is that with good planning, preparation and getting knowlege/training you would hope to never have to make a life and death choice while out in the bush.

                Re: Quick tyre inflation

Yeah I'm with you on the proper planning and training score. And yes, when it comes down to it there's other things you could probably do rather than attempting this, such as just driving on the rims. I suppose though it's something to add to your knowledge base if, heaven forbid, you find yourself staring at the grim reaper. I'm certainly not saying it's a particularly good Idea when surrounded by tinder dry spinifex or the like. But ok, if you were to attempt this some common sense would go a long way. Clear away anything that's likely to catch alight. If you've got any protective clothing, put it on. Some type of head or eye protection if you have that. Maybe wet a towel and drape yourself in it if you can spare the water. You'd need to ignite the accelerant from as great a distance as possible. Can't think how you'd do that other than the flame throwing method used in the vid, and yes, it really isn't all that safe. Maybe attach a firelighter or the like to the end of a long tent pole or branch. If you had a chemical type fire extinguisher then of course you'd have that at the ready.

Not saying I like the idea, at all, but it's something to add to your knowledgebase. Hopefully, none of us ever needs to attempt it.

                  Re: Quick tyre inflation

My concern with this video is that he has to air down after the inflation.
What pressure did he manage to put in it in the first place? Tyre explosion sounds like a real possibility to me.

                    In a TOTAL emergency "maybe"...

Tyre explosin is a real issue. You can hear the pressure after he has done it "redneck" style..

I have had a tube made up by Shipways, it has a bunch of adaptors from a screw on tyre inflator at each end to clip on ones, and a 1/4 turn quick action ball valve in the middle.

When i have had to use it I simply over inflate my spare to a few PSI under maximum reccomended. Then screw on the tube with one way valve. Screw the other side onto the tyre to be inflated (or clip on, it doesnt really matter). Make sure the valve is NOT in the tyre to be "beaded" it allows more air flow.

Bit of soapy water, and a wiggle (strap around it if needs help holding it up) and hit the valve. "kaphwoomp"

I think you may have just volunteered yourself for a Piccy demo Piggy. Is it possible for you to show your tube you got made up for the masses to see. Would be handy little stickie to have for rebeading a tyre.

                      Food for thought

What the video doesnt show is that you are supposed to remove the valve from the tyre first, that way there is a release for all the pressure generated by the explosion. Its purely a tool for reseating only, not for inflating your tyres, but I think I'd have to be at my wits end before I'd attempt it myself.

On the last GTG recce I was joking about doing this if MLC rolled a tyre after going down to 10PSI. I certainly wouldn't do it too my tyres, but someone elses.......... still probably no.

Mick usually has top notch advise, but putting a ratchet strap around the tyre is probably more dangerous than what is posted in the video. the pressure that can be exerted on the strap can easily cause it to break, then you have bits of steel and strap flying off at high speed.

Originally posted by Piggy View Post

Piggy has the right idea, although it doesn't need to be nearly so complex. Just take the valve out of the flat tyre, slip a piece of 1/4" air hose over the valve stem, then take the valve out of your spare tyre and slip the other end of the hose on, you then have the equivelant of a decent sized tank of compressed air and maximum air flow into flat tyre.

Anyway Rob, if you read this then you will be able to see what I was joking about!

                          Cheers Andrew
