  • buying/selling number plates

Can anyone explain what the deal is with buying or selling number plates? My understanding is that the RTA (nsw) always own the plates. Does this mean that the price that people pay to buy plates is purely for the transfer of vehicle?? If so, there are people with way too much money out there- I've seen some on sale for 6 figures!

You buy the rights and ownership lease of the plate.
I have been buying/selling a number of various plates over the years, and it can be quite a lucrative little profit maker...

Some are free transfer (first time) and then once resold you may have to pay 10% of your buy price (or the original sellers buy price if its more) to display them on a vehicle.

Seems plates always go up in value. Mate just got into the 50k range for a plate he paid under 4 k for 5 years ago.

Yeah thats what I didn't get- paying huge amounts of money for them and you will never get to own them outright. But if people are willing then thats fine by me as Im looking to sell only (when the time is right) .

I noticed on the Dirty Weekends web-site (Brad from MAXTRAX) is selling custom Dirty Weekends personalized plates (pictured below). You get to pick your own combination of numbers and letters. I thought it was odd that personalized plates were sold on point of sale web-sites as opposed to the proper ministry. Is this common?

              Re: buying/selling number plates

I think they are "business plates" which is the same as other personalised plates but with their own theme. I find it strange that they don't include a clause saying "subject to availability" as I'm sure the combination would have to be available. I wouldn't want to go through the whole transaction only to find that combination wasn't available.

At first I thought they were Fun Plates where you make your own combination and put it over the bar, in the shed, etc (like I have done) but at $499 it is the real deal.

                Re: buying/selling number plates

Car clubs, sporting clubs, RSLs, Rotary, PAWS (RSPCA), what-ever can get custom series produced here in WA. I think minimum number is 200 plates. For example the Mazda MX-5 club has plates with the car club emblem on the plate. Several other marks have similar.

If you have personalised plates here in westoz then you have a certificate of "right to display" which you are free to sell. I have 2 sets - one on the Prado (cost me $350) and one on my Cobra (cost $200 10 years ago).

I also have a car with a remake of the number plate from an old series that was issued in Albany. I think they cost $15.

This makes it easier to pick my car out at the big carparks!

You buy the plates like any other plate and are obviously giving Brad free advertising.

                    Re: buying/selling number plates

We both have personalised plates on our cars (NSW). We paid a one-off fee for their issue a few years ago. Apparently now you pay a yearly fee for personal plates (after a specific date).

I have a pair of motorcycle personalised plates which I've had for 15 years (stored for 4 years at $50 per year) just in case I get another bike. They cost nothing to issue to the bike, but if I were to surrender them and try for re-issue (if someone else didn't get them in the meantime) I would have to pay the yearly fee.
