  • Taking on "Big Red"

Bidla (2008 Auto Diesel) and I (2004 Auto V6) are planning to have a go at Big Red when we visit Birdsville next month. Looking for suggestions regarding what would be the best way to attempt it, high range, low range etc.
Which car will do it the easiest?

very hard to say which will be the best, all depends on the conditions, my pick would be the v6, more punch and good torque, but on the flip side the d4d hasnt got the as much punch but has more torque, give em both a go, start of in high range with a bit of stick, if ya get ya tyre pressures right they should both shit it in. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Not sure about diesel, but for the petrol - tyres down to 16-18psi,
might have to go as low as 12 if sand is very soft but be carefull not to roll the tyre of the rim - low range 2nd
3000-5000 rpm. This is for the harder track on the left...
The track over big red which is everyone else attempts, you should be able to make in up in low range second gear without much hassle...

      Cheers,

easy peasy this way in the D4D, centre diff locked, 20 psi
you'll then try again diff unlocked, little more difficult
then try high range with a bit of stick - won't quite do it
then try the track on the left low 2nd diff locked - nobody managed this one the day we played.

my 2003 manual diesel made big red easily .18 psi tyre pressure , low range kept the revs between 3000 and 5000 in second and third gear and ease off the throttle so you dont become airborne as you go over the top .Big Red is long and straight and perhaps one of the easier dunes to get over
