  • Is Ok for 16' snow chains fit into 17' wheels or not?

    Hi All,

I have snow chains for my old LC80, it has 275/70R16 wheels.

My current LC200 has 285/65R17 wheels.

Is Ok to fit the old 16' snow chains into the 17' wheels or not?

    Thanks...

The chain sizing is based on the outside diameter and width of the tyre.

So, if you know the chain make and model, you can probably look it up on the web. Most chains cover a small range of tyre sizes.

Alternatively, you could test fit them to the LC200 to see if they fit.

      Thanks Michael.

I always carry the same chain into the snow with my Prado (265/65R17 wheel) and I never need to use them before.

Cross the fingers for this weekend in the snow :-)

Check with the 16' Chains on the 17' wheel (285/65R17) and cann't close the chains.

So, just get the new chains and set for this weekend in the snow

Thank for Michael again: straight forward tip and very practical!

          Meta,

Try the following web link: http://www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp

You enter the previous tyre size and then the new one. It calculates the difference in circumference etc. according to the values you supplied, there will be a 34.25mm gap. This could still be ok.

          Hope this helps mate

            Thanks Albert,

My wife pointed out last night: '17' wheel is 1' over the 16' wheel in diameter, so the circle's circumference will be 3.14' more with the 17' wheel (Pi or ?)'.

(Women are good with Math :P )

You are right, there is about 4cm gap and I just get the new chains today.

            All best!
