  • Disappointing Hilux

Have been running a 4wd course for some people down at Esperance. Three cars to play with: 2008 t/dsl 100 series auto, 2008 t/dsl hilux auto, and late 2008 t/dsl Colorado manual.

Well, to say I was disappointed with the Hilux would be an understatement. I know it's D4D is a detuned version of the Prado but with it's skinny tyres this thing is a real slug, especially through the dunes and along the beach. You just can't get it to rev from start so it was a bastard in the soft stuff.

I'm glad I bought the new Prado and didn't go the dual cab ute way.

    Re: Disappointing Hilux

It's seems to me it's only recently that Hilux's have come to be bought by people wanting to play rather than work. Up until a few years ago, Toyota really just aimed the Hilux as a work ute and nothing more than that. Certainly the 1988 3L Engine Lux I had was very limited in real power. Great farm vehicles though, and got me into some pretty tough fishing spots as well. No good on the highway though, and not much fun to go towing things with either. Toyota have really dressed the latest Lux's up to appeal more to the players, though the basic level "work" ute's still appear in tray back guise if you look hard enough. Seems Ford Rangers and Mitsu Triton utes have really taken over that space now. It is odd though, to dress to top level Lux's up as more of a Play vehicle and then not put a fully Tuned D4D engine in them. I guess there's supposed to be a pecking order in the Toyota Lineup, as you go further up the line, you get more powerful engines. It just wouldn't do to have a Lux more powerful than a Prado. And Sahara Owners would revolt if Prado's had more powerful engines. A nice little chip might even the score somewhat.....

How do the V6 Lux's compare to the V6 Prado's??

The Luxes have always had less power in all engines than the Prados, some say its because of the weight difference others say like you do a pecking order. Personally I dont know I think all Toyotas are underpowered but then that may be why they last so long due to how conservative Toyota are with them?

Strange because the couple of D4-D Hiluxes I have driven seemed quite good in the power and torque dept. One was an Apollo camper van and drove it all over Kakadu including in sand etc no problems.

            Re: Disappointing Hilux

Actually Toyota do make a Hilux with poke - it's called the TRD and sports a supercharged petrol V6. Thirsty little bugger.

I don't think the car was a Friday one off. It lacks ompf off the mark compared to the Prado. And the auto appears to lack the compression when descending compared to my auto Prado t/dsl. The manual says use "L" for maximum engine braking but there wasn't much there.

It's only a work rig and I guess the fellas are lucky that they even get a 4 x 4. We bent the side step whilst traversing some rocks on the beach then folded the bash plate under the front end when trying to get over a dune.
