The mine will make the Worimi Aboriginal Land Council one of the richest organisations of its kind.

The land council conceived the plan in 2007 after taking possession of former state-protected conservation lands on Stockton Bight.

Sounds like it is not just the Worimi who are going to make a packet out of it.

Greed. Nothing but bloody greed. Sending sand to China? WTF?

Maybe we could sell them some of our seawater too...

Absolutely disgraceful! I see this all the time with Aboriginal Land Councils who will do anything for money regardless of the so called cultural significance to them. The Port Stephens Council are equally to blame in this as it is loaded with money hungry greedy developers who will approve any developement if there is money in it for them, I am sure there will be a large number of counillors whos companies will benefit from this.

There is nothing like a bit of greenie tabloid journalism ..... most of the facts are wrong and/or misleading.

Sand mining and extraction have ocurrred on Stockton since before WW2 .....

The military used the area as a target range, apparently there are some unexploded bombs still around. There are/have been two operations occuring on 16 leases for many years. Mineral extraction leaves 99% of the sand onsite only removing the mineral content. Mining is used for a heap of things including building products such as concrete in all of those mcmasions down Sydney way. It has always been a dodgy operation as wind drift occurs over the site adding bonus material daily.

As for selling to China - I don't hear anyone complaining about all the other mining industries and the Mega tons of coal, aluminium, steel, etc ..... and anything else we can dig out of the ground, heading off shore to China.

Actually, I read that article as positive towards the project! There was not a single comment in it about the effect on the environment or some lesser known species. No mention of EIA's or whatever they are called now.

It's easy to be critical from afar, as some of us here have been, but from that one newspaper report, I got the distinct impression that the land council and developers were falling over themselves by the possibility of cashing in big time. That raises the question of has the project been properly considered from all angles, or are we going to hear of another disaster in a few years time?

Could be wrong, I've never been there. :!:

This one’s not a mineral sand mine...from what I have read they are not extracting anything.... they will be selling the sand its self. Apparently quality sand is in high demand throughout Asia's building industry.

Let’s hope fences don't go up everywhere restricting access and turning this into another great area we are locked out off :!:
