  • My High Speed Prado Vid

I thought this was a bit different to the std pradopoint vids so I haven't put it in that thread - if it needs to go there feel free to move it mods (or I can).

I've been doing a lot of high speed video at uni the last few months - some at up to 45000 frames per second usually in the lab/studio.
We also had a production style vid to do with a lower spec camera.

I chose to shoot a bit of mud, Mickey T's & Prado & this is what we've ended up with..

Sorry it's only black & white and the camera quality is bad, as is web video which cuts frames but you get the idea
    Cheers - Phil Taylor

I thought that was pretty neat Phill, ive mucked around with super 8 years ago and had heaps of fun with it. This would look great doing a little rock hopping though. Love the B&W, adds a little art to your short vid. Something the media has forgotten about these days, 9 out of 10 from me, Zook.

          Phil

Thanks for sharing that, love the waves in the close out titles segment, the deformation of the tyres over the logs is amazing.

The view of the puddles after the Prado passes is interesting.

          Love this kind of photography.

Got any more? Spinning in soft sand or Max Trax at work would be a good subject.

Re: My High Speed Prado Vid

The deformation of the tyres was what I was interested in myself. The company that sells some of the cameras we use used to have a vid on their site of a drag car taking off from the line. The tyres completely fold on themselves in that case as the torque from the wheel overtakes the speed of the rubber while the friction holds it back. Didn't expect that but I thought a vid showing the way the tyre flexes over stuff on the track would be good. I must admit, using a burn out log makes it a bit spectacular with all the ash etc flying in the air too!

I would love to do sand, max trax ads etc but unfortunately we only have limited access to the cameras. The Olympus one I used is a low spec model and that's about $80 000 worth. The higher spec colour ones are from a company called "Vision research" and are called Phantom cameras. One of the ones we use can shoot up to 80 000 frames per second at quite low res in colour and that's up around the $250 000 mark...don't think they'd be too keen on me taking that to the beach for a bit of fun :?

I'm hoping to end up doing this as a job. Previously it's been used mainly in ballistics imaging etc but now the cameras are of high enough standard to do film & TV. There is one Phantom model which will shoot high def at about 50000fps which is more than enough for most applications.

Trouble is, as you would guess there is VERY limited employment for this type of thing. I possibly have a contract with a car crash test company here where we image every new car that goes onto the aus market. Have a look here if you want to see a Prado crash test (scroll to bottom). Autoliv also now do quite a bit of work in wildlife high speed video for National Geographic which I'd love to get into. It's their unadvertised side line work to give them a bit of variety. This year they've been to Papua New Guinea, Alaska and Tonga doing Nat Geo stuff.

Anyway, there you go. A lot of fun but actually really hard work. So many things can go wrong. Recently we (a few uni students) were invited for a bit of fun to go video a car blowing up for a music video and Autoliv were doing the official high speed stuff. On Wednesday they called us because their files had corrupted - now they're using our footage. Luckily we were there. Can't show you that vid now tho!
