  • Big Day Out 2010 Melbourne Trip Report

Big Day Out 2010 is getting closer, tickets for the Sydney show has already SOLD OUT. Thankfully a second show has been anounced and goes on sale this Sunday night at midnight. Another good lineup, but not as good as past years id have to admit. I have to say im a hugh BDO tragic, been to every BDO in Sydney bar 2 in the last 17 years (including the Meltalica double show in Sydney). The others where Gold Coast 04 and Adelaide 08. Im hoping to get tickets for the Melbourne show this time around. Im hoping the heat wont be with us as much as this year, it was a killer in Adelaide (40+'C). Although id have to admit it was very well catered for and cooling off was high on the organisers list. Top marks for that. It saw me sucking on my first tinney by 1pm, it was very unlike myself trust me. Ok, its not everybodies cup of tea, and maybe one day ill grow out of it. But its such a great day in the sun and it only comes around once a year. Im praying to the BDO gods we get tickets tonight, because ill be spewing if I miss out. Who else is coming to the best outdoor rock festival in Australia?

Re: Big Day Out 2010 ... Who going?

We wanted to go to the Melbourne BDO but Faith No More are headlining at the Soundwave Festival 3 weeks later and couldn't get enough time off work too go to both. We had a blast last year but hot as hell the only cold thing was beer or $4 for a small bottle of water. Hope you get your tickets and have a great time music festival's would have to be one of the best day's you can have.

We got 2 tickets for Melbourne BDO 2010 from the website last night. Some tense moments I can tell you. I was a bit worried that we wouldnt get through due to living in ALice Springs, so I still have faith in wireless broadband through Bigpond. Now were going through all the bullcrap of trying to get cheap flights from Tiger, its been a nightmare. Anyhow we will get it sorted, heaps looking forward to January.

          Hi Zook,

I probably wont be going this year, but went to the last few we had. Unfortunately there is no one there I really want to see this year, so I will be going to soundwave here in Adelaide instead - looking forward to Faith No More.
Has the final line up been announced for BDO?

Re: Big Day Out 2010 ... Who's going?

Hi Switched, I think the majority of bands have been announced although they always throw a few more in there in the last minute. Id have to agree with you its not the best lineup this year but as stated before im a BDO tragic. I just MUST go. Its my first time for Melbourne and the only locations ive havnt been to yet is Perth and Auckland. Maybe Id like to go to Perth next year, ill see though. Cost is the main issue, airfares alone is the big killer. Then your accomadation, meals, transport and spending money. It can endup a very expensive weekend. Heres a link to BDO lineup- http://www.bigdayout.com/lineup/artists.php
It still will be a good day, even if it rains for us Central Australians. We dont see too much of it. Looks like Gold Coast, Sydney and now Melbourne has now completely sold out. A second show in Sydney was announced just after it sold out and took the pressure off the Melbourne show but I still think alot os sSydney people have decided to go south. Although Melbourne has sold out quicker then previous years. Adelaide, Perth and Auckland still have tickets avaliable if your keen on going. Ive got a heap of friends that are also going to Soundwave. It would be cool to see Faith No More again, but we can only afford to go to one festival as were flying back to Sydney to see The Pixies in March. Looking heaps forward to that as well, its a shame their not playing at BDO.

Re: Big Day Out 2010 ... Who's going?

Hi fishfinder, yeh know the feeling as I used to work for Jands Production Services who are the biggest production company in the southern hemisphere. We did all the big shows in Australia, New Zealand and most of Asia. BDO, Prince, Madonna, AC/DC, Guns and Roses, U2 just to name a few shows I was on over the years. They also do alot of smaller gigs and festivals. I ended up with heaps of spare tickets if they couldnt fill the seats. I remember I got about 20 spare tickets for Lenny Kravis back in Sydney. The job had its pros and cons, long hours setting up, get to watch the show and get paid for it then you have to pack up, get the gear back to the factory, overhaul all the gear and send it back on the road for the next show. Sometimes when it rained id have to clean the chains on the hoist by hand to get the rust off. That job really sucked. Funny enough they used to supply tea and coffee for free in the factory, althought the spoon was always attached to a chain so it wasnt stolen, but the strange thing was it had a hole in the middle of the spoon. It always used to puzzle me. I ended up asking of of the long term workers, seems the spoons use to always disapear (even the plastic ones) because some of the loaders (roadies) or labourers where heroin addicts. So once somebody drilled a hole in the spoon, it never disapeared. Anyhow it was a good life experience while it lasted, I eventully got a real good paying job and moved on.

For those in WA the BDO online tickets sold out, but are still available at outlets. But if looking for an alternative, Southbound is on earlier at Busso 8-10th January, with many of the same lineup as BDO.

Got my tickets, taking my teenage sons. The stadium is 300m walk from my place, so its an easy stagger.
                    Cheers

Re: Big Day Out 2010 ... Who's going?

Well Big Day Out is over for yet another year, the question is will it be back on next year after the mishaps that happened in Melbourne. I can assure you I had nothing to do with this, although has now led the organisers and venue owners to reconsider all future plans for the use of the land. Anyhow my wife and I had a good time being my 18 or 19th BDO since it started and it was good to see it for the first time in Melbourne. The venue for this show was at Flemington Racecourse, an odd location I must say. The basic layout of the venue was a little cramped in some areas, something which is a little different then Sydney. I know I shouldnt compare the different venues although id have to say that the Melbourne venue has some improving to do. Lack of shade was the first item I noticed (lucky the weather was good this year), public transport was a little confusing for a non local (we decided to drive), having to find other stages was a mission due to the racecourse layout (fences, flower plots etc) and the bar areas were fenced off to the general festival goers. I found this rather odd, no other venue in Australia has this arrangement. I can see the advantages of discouraging under age drinking etc, but it also created other problems as we found out later in the evening.

This is our first view of the venue. We got there later to miss the rush, but found out as soon as we got inside that you have to squeeze past the crowd watching the main stages to get in propper.

The Lilly Pad was back as always, some funny stuff happens here all in the name of fun.

It was great to see a Wollongong band The Tumbleweed playing, it had been some time since they played at such a large venue.

Devendra Banhart was a band that the wife wanted to see, sadly they didnt play "Little Spider".

As the sun started to set it was time to hit the bar and sink a few coldies in the "drinkers cage". This is our view of the main stage from the cage.

While Muse was playing the idiots started to play around. This guy decided to get on top of the shade inside the drinkers caged area, he made the security look like a pack of gooses. Other punters started to throw what ever they could get there hands on, chairs, tables, bottles , cans and practicly allsorts of stuff heading in his direction. He eventully came down and was arrested and escortted off the venue, his fate was unknown.

The Muse played away regardless of what was happening, the light show was AWESOME to say the least. It was the highlight of the event.

Not long after these guys finished it was time to head home as Groove Armarda was still playing which was impossible to see due the amount of festival goers crowding the Boiler Room. So to sum it all up, it was a good day although the arrangement of the venue was not to my likeing. Adelaide and Sydney looks a far better option then Melbourne or Gold Coast, sorry call me spoilt but since ive now only got one more venue to visit (Perth) we might just endup there next year,

                      Zook.
