  • Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

Today Neil and I were doing a bit of christmas shopping and the local hardware giant.

I saw a bloke in an old dodgy Discovery "trying " with all his might to get his purchases into his car - it wasn't going to happen! I pointed him out to Neil, we decided to see it he wanted a hand. He didn't need asking twice, so we loaded up the tracklander with all the long bits. He wanted to shout us a beer we declined and asked him to just do something nice for someone else.
Neil travelled with the bloke and on the way to his house he pulled in at the local liquor giant. Neil and I chatted outside while he ran in and shortly returned with a box of crownies which he gave to Neil and a bottle of Moet which he gave to me. WOW!! We didn't want to take it, it was way too generous but he insisted. He stated that although he had plenty of money had was very time poor and we just saved him an hour or so.
We continued to his house (VERY nice house it was too), dropped his bits off and now are enjoying our rewards for being nice.

It's not just the season, we'd help anyone anytime in that situation. So the lesson is be nice to people, some will surprise you

    Thankyou Ian and Cheers 8)

Pulled up at an ATM as a young woman was leaving the ATM reading her balance slip as she walked away.
When I tried to put my card into the machine it would not take it , Then i read the screen and it said "would you like another transaction",Thought this strange so pushed no
and out came Her card. I went into the shopping center to look for her and tracked her down before entering the super market.
She was so happy that she insisted on a couple of instant scratchies as a Reward for honesty , while this wasn't necessary, the $25.00
      that one uncovered was nice.

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

This one's the other way around, where I have had to reward a stranger.
Years ago, I used to ride a Ducati SD 900 Darmah, and after spending a weekend at Dubbo visiting an old girlfriend, I headed back to Sydney late Sunday afternoon. As I rode through the small township of Guerie about 6pm, my rear tyre suddenly went flat so I limped into the local servo to see if they could fix it.
'No" said the owner, he was about to close, but suggested I try the engineering place up the road. The family were just sitting down to dinner but the son who must have been in his late twenties, jumped in his cruiser and went up to his house and pulled the tube out the rear tyre on his Kawasaki Z900 and drove back and helped me get me going again. Unfortunately, after a big weekend I only had enough money on me to buy fuel to get me home so I offered to buy him a lottery ticket when I got home, but he insisted that he didn't want a cent from me.
Well, next time I headed back out to Dubbo, I made sure that I bought a replacement tube and I stopped at the Guerie pub on the way through and bought him a case of beer for his troubles.
Surprised the heck out of him as he didn't expect to see me again. Goes to show the spirit and generousity of country folk.

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

Years ago while camping, after getting a call for help on the UHF, we drove 70 kms at 9 pm to help out a guy in a cruiser with camper trailer on the back - he had broken a front diff trying to get up a rocky track. He had a winch but no snatch blocks, winch extensions etc. etc.
We spent 2 hours winching and coaxing the car up the hill. We took him back to our camp and he had used all his fuel charging his batteries for his winch. I gave him a jerry can of fuel. He insisted on getting my address, I said don't worry about it.
A couple of weeks later I got a nice card and a cheque that covered the cost of the fuel three times over, he was a surgeon from Brighton or somewhere like that.

Anyone else I've ever helped ....nada, zip ...not that I expect it.
          Cheers, Wayne

People need to learn...like the movie 'Pay it Forward' and the world would be a better place. I have helped many poeple with different things for not reward, and I never intend to get one. I try to help when I can and some day they may help others in need. What comes around goes around we just all need to remember that from time to time and not just around this time of the year

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

Like Dobbo, i was helped many years ago by total strangers when i blew a radiator hose on my old HZ Kingswood.

Since then i have helped quite a few people stuck on the side of the road. Most are very grateful, but i wouldn't expect to be offered anything in return.

I must admit though that i was a bit miffed when i saw one bloke in the pub at Rawnsely Park the night i stopped and changed a flat tyre for him. Didnt even offer a coldie

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

Heading from Birdsville to Mt Isa I was bogged just north of Bedourie. A guy heading south stopped and helped me out and then realized he had lost a bag from his roof rack. He asked me to keep a look out for it and hand it in to the shop in Boulia if I found it. I found the bag about 100km up the road and handed it in. His mate at the shop then asked us to deliver a package for him to a motel in Mt Isa. He then rang through to make sure they would hold our room as we would be arriving very late. Good folk in the bush!

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

Saw something amazing the other day.

I work one day a week walking the city streets with a GPS doing drainage (stormwater drains) pickups with the gear, then go back to the office and plot it all up. The lowlife's who've accosted me while I've been out doing this beggar belief. Not long ago I was threatened with a gun and told I'd get a bullet in me if I didn't hand over my work phone. Yes, I do actually live in Perth. So I've become extremely cynical when it comes to human goodwill. So when the following happened I nearly fell over...

I was working on one side of a very busy road. On the other side, I saw a very elderly gentleman wobble across a side street connecting to the busy road. When he reached the kerb he tripped and fell over, sprawling half out onto the side street and in the way of traffic. He was clearly having trouble struggling back to the kerb and out of the way. I couldn't cross the busy street and got very worried as several cars belted past barely missing him, bloody typical I thought. Then, a taxi screamed to a halt on the opposite side of the side street, blocking all traffic, and the driver rushed out to help the old man. Then no less than 6 burly mechanics from the Ford yard nearby rushed over and started directing traffic and assisting the taxi driver, and gave fast hooners menacing looks which was kinda funny in hindsight. Then, a truckie, who'd been filling his Kenworth (no trailer) at a fuel station right near me pulled out of the station and laid on the air horns until all the traffic stopped and let him through. He went over and blocked access to the side street with his rig and hit the hazard lights, then got out and helped the mechanics carry the old man and settle him in the taxi, which ten took off quickly with him inside. I can only guess the old man had been hurt and they were going off to a medical clinic or something.

Couldn't believe it! Gives you at least a little hope....

Re: Have you ever been rewarded for helping a stranger?

A few years back I was walking out of one of the local shopping centres when I spied what I will refer to as a local acting pretty suspisciously. He was on the otherside of the road and did not see me watching him as he pulled out a ladies wallet and proceeded to rip out the money before tossing the wallet on the ground. So I waited till he had moved away then darted over and grabbed the wallet, I saw it was not his from the ID's inside and so I then followed the guy back into the shopping mall.

He was headed for the liquor store so I bailed him up against a shop window and demanded he hand over the money and told him he was nothing but a low life thief. He tried to push past me but then I just let rip on him and he decided that it was a better idea to just hand over the money and get out before the security turned up. First off he tried to just give me the coins but I had seen the notes he took out so I just demanded he hand it all over which he eventually did.

He took off back out of the shopping centre but there was no point in pursuing him as they never get punished for it anyway. I walked into the shop and asked if I could use their phone to call the lady who owned the wallet and the shop assistants were still just standing there gob smacked at what they had seen me do, suddenly one of them just blurted out "Wow that was incredible you were like some kind of hero."Well shucks, anyone would have done the same thing just I was the bunny who saw it. Anyway the shop manager rang the lady and told them what had occured and I left the wallet with them to hand back to her as I had an appointment to keep. Well a few days later I get a letter from the lady who owned the wallet thanking me and giving me 4 cinema tickets. I certainly had not expected anything for the deed so it was a nice surprise.
