  • One Finger Wave

What are other ppointers experiances and opinion on the wave.

On my rescent road trip from canberra to townsville, I noticed that I rarely got any acknowledgment of my waves in NSW but in QLD I got more.
I tend to give drivers the wave everywhere

      Re: One Finger Wave

I just recently showed my husband how to do the one finger wave (after growing up in the country, him in the city)....we noticed since we bought our jayco camper and doing a couple of trips....we do get a few fingers, but it must be because we have joined the 'grey nomad' gang. I drive around everyday waiting to get noticed, and maybe a few fingers..............but nothing  Oh well, we will have to do a trip to WA and flash our PP sticker over there!!! 8) 8) 8)

        Re: One Finger Wave

Gowing up and living in Tassie meant I was used to the 1 finger wave everywhere (most people down there do it). Funnily, when down there with Vic plates, we don't get nearly as many
In Melbourne we only ever get the other one finger wave
Actually, when I got married (to a Melbourne girl), SWMBO used to get mad at me for doing it cause it "wasn't the thing to do" here. It was waay too embarrassing for her.

We tend to give the wave only when off the bitumen. Unwritten rule i think. We get quite a few acknowledgements in return.

            Re: One Finger Wave

My wife grew up in the middle or Eyre Peninsula and i am originally from Whyalla, (in South OZ for those that dont know) We call it the "west coast wave"as everybody on Eyre Peninsula seems to do it, but not so much elsewhere unless you are well of the beaten track and not seeing many other cars. When i used to ride motorbikes though, a wave or a salute to other bikers was mandatory.

I agree that it's mainly seen off road or north of Port Augusta along the highway.

North of the Overlander road house , east of Norseman to Port Augusta and north of Meekathara is where the travellers become more friendly .

I noticed it most on Kangaroo Island. It is almost universal there.

Hi guys and spent two weeks over in SA and found that after you cross the VIC border, the one finger wave is alive and well, but when i came back to Vic,it died ???
Am an ex Tassie Boy and yes i grew up with it and my female friend on the trip to SA seemed amussed when i did it as she has never seen it before???
Just goes to show, there are still some manners out there and lets keep it up as i beleive it is a part of the AUSSIE way..
we are all here for a good time, not a long time,so enjoy it while you can..

                      Re: One Finger Wave

Are we talking waving to other Prados or just in general ?

I presume the latter. I've found it's unusual in Vic, unless you're on a dirt road in back of nowhere.
Soon as you get to outback NSW or QLD is common, off the main highways.
I always took it to mean "you're allright mate if you ever broke down or needed help you'd get it out here"

As for vehicle brand specific waves, it is prolific in the LandRover community - they all wave to each other. ( well the Defender crew do anyway )
Toyos are too common for it really. ( although Troopy owners wave to each other )
                      Cheers, Wayne

We are talking about the great Aussie saluate which is the norm up here whenever you pass someone aren't we. Just like you stop and help if someone is broken down on the side of the road.
