  • First aid/Trauma Kits in ya Prado

Good call there Matt. We did a trip across the Simposn last year and the wife went out and bought up big in the way of medical aid. We have a very good trauma pack that would easily have all of that plus a lot of additional gear including bits and stings kit, air mask or recusitation, antibiotics and other perscriptions. My wife was even trying to get some morphine but I thought that was a little bit over the top and would also be pretty well impossible to get. The family doctor agreed to provide a perscription for the antibiotics due to the location and medical history in my family.

Would also worth suggesting that if you havn't done a first air course to go out and do one. Might not put you in the same leauge as Matt and his wife but it might just save a loved one one day.

Hi Matt, yes we should all carry a decent first aid/trauma kit, I dont need to lash out the $55 dollars as our St John first aid kit has all that and more in it. A good first aid kit has always been in our car as my wife used to be a nurse, and then was a lecturer for St john doing senior first aid and industry training. it has been a good reminder though, and my wife is going through our kit and restocking and replacing anything out of date as i type this.

    Cheers Andrew

Yep......agree fully, as someone who is also senior first aid, and fire trained, I carry 3 extinguishers (left, right & rear), and a St Johns 4X4 First aid kit, $110.00 great value...... and I have had need to use it over the years.

Re: First aid/Trauma Kits in ya Prado

Was just talking to the wife yesterday about doing a 1st aid course, and the need to upgrade out 1st aid kit. Personally I find it's important to suit this to your own family's needs especially. I have diabetes and whilst many bites etc don't tend to worry me, a simple gastro bug (often a possibility in the bush when camping with others) can put me in hospital for a few weeks if things stuff up my blood sugar levels. I carry maxalon to try to prevent this.

After our daughter gave herself 3rd degree burns a year or so ago and they treated it with silver dressings, I carry it as well. It's just the best stuff and you can hardly tell my girl burnt herself now. Already helped a friend with it when camping before. It's expensive, you wont find it in most 1st aid packs but well worth the extra money.

Re: First aid/Trauma Kits in ya Prado

I've got a small one about the same size as that in my car at all time, as well as a 1kg fire extinguisher.

Also got 'Roothy's' First Aid kit on the way which is bigger and has more supplies. Am also going to throw in a couple of the components of a trauma kit in, just the big pad bandages to stop bleeding. In reality though, a shirt or something will do the same job though, hence not bothering about getting a full trauma kit. At the end of the day if the wound gets dirty but the bleeding is stopped it means bugger all as no matter what you do the hospital will clean the wound thoroughly.

Thinking of getting another 1kg fire extinguisher too, as I've heard stories of a 5kg extinguisher not stopping an engine fire.

I also maintain a pretty good kit, as my 1st aid kit also accompanies me out spear fishing. I keep a good stock of pressure bandages and battle field dressings (afer all, a sucking chest wound is natues way of telling you to stop!) I also keep a few packs of instant ice.

I have heard of 'travel doctors' who specialise in authorising prescriptions for restricted drugs that you may need on remote trips, but I have never used one.

Same one in our Prado. It's a pretty comprehensive kit.

Agreed, you should have a well stocked first aid kit and know how to use it in your car. The last club trip we went on one of the members is a doctor so he had everything inlcuding a defibrillator in his vehicle.

Agree with all this and carry a good first aid/trauma kit. Cannot emphasise also how important it is to know CPR. Don't know how many training courses I have done over the years and never needed it. Then last month on holidays in Phillipines at a beach resort, while walking on the beach, saw a crowd and went over. Found a bloke doing CPR on old man. He looked exhausted so offered to take over, which was accepted. Continued until doctor and paramedic arrived. I suspect it was a heart attack. Unfortunatly found out next day the old guy did not make it but felt I had done my best by him.

Hutch: What industry are you in? If you're anything related to construction I'd highly recommend the CFMEU one. I've done it and it's really, really thorough. One of my co-workers is an ex paramedic now first aider and he's done about a dozen courses over the years and says they do by far the best course, even better than the paramedics course he had to complete.

Even if you're not in the industry I'd give them a call and have a talk to them about whether it'd suit or not.

Re: First aid/Trauma Kits in ya Prado

Because I do a heck of a lot of traveling in outback regions I carry a full St Johns First Aide Kit. Now I kjnow a lot of people do this but how many of you have looked inside the kit since you bought it? Just remember that your first aide kit is there for an emergency, when you need it the most, how disheartening would it be to find when you reach for the kit and none of the bandages stick because they are too old or the saline solutions are no longer useable, the gloves have perished etc. Now is the time to drag it out from where ever you have it stashed and check the use by dates or the condition of the contents and renew those things that need renewing. Do it now to make sure that when you do have to use it it will not let you down.

I add to mine all the time it does not take much to buy a bandage or two when you are in a chemist and you will be surprised when you come to need the kit just how well you can dress a wound. This occurred at Christmas when my wife tripped over a garden edging at a Dubbo motel and ended up opening up both hands and knees. Apart from the agonising screams waking up everyone in the motel at 5:30am, I was able to dress her wounds and provide pain medication to enable us to complete that days 14 hour drive.
