  • Help me choose a new phone!

    Hey guys,

My current phones (Sony C905) is absolutely crapping itself so I'm about to look at getting a new one.

First off I'll be looking at phones priced around the $69 (monthly cap) range.

The only option I've seen in my brief searching that I like the looks of is the Blackberry Storm 2 Smartphone. Has anyone had any experience with using these (or similar Blackberry's)?

No chance of me getting an iPhone, but if anyone knows of any other similar interface phone and can recommend it I'd love to hear any details at all about it.

And on another side note, regarding data useage, if I was to be checking the internet only occasionally each day on my phone, would 500MB be enough?

    Thanks,
    Rob

Do yourself a favour and check out the new phone from HTC called the Desire. Its been dubbed the "iPhone Killer", and is based on exactly the same hardware as the Google Nexus One (manufactured by HTC).

Its in the process of being released, Telstra/Next G has exclusive rights for 3 months, after that its open slather with all the other networks. Otherwise you can get them outright for sub $900

If I wasn't convinced that the iPhone was the best thing out there at the moment, and the driving force behind improving the interface on all phones, I'd definitely be looking hard at an Android phone. If I couldn't stomach them, then it'd be Nokia for me.

There are lots of reasons not to get an iPhone, but the big one for it is that it has kicked the whole industry in the backside for delivering shockingly bad phone user interfaces.

Ive had a 3GS since they came out last year and im sick of having such a powerful phone, so crippled because apple only wants you to know what apple wants. The HTC Desire is all the things the iPhone should of been. Yes the iPhone really helped get the main stream market into Smart Phones and caused a lot of other manufactures to really lift their game, but that doesnt mean the iPhone is the BEST thing out there at the moment, far from it!

I would say go for the HTC Desire if you are not keen on an iPhone. Personally I prefer the iPhone but I understand that it is not everyone's choice with it being a closed platform. Depending on how technical you are you could always go for purchasing an iPhone outright from Apple (no contract) and jailbreak it to load pretty much anything you want and not be constricted

The HTC Desire are quite expensive here, you can get it much cheaper if you purchased one from the UK or elsewhere overseas, you just need to know someone there who is willing to ship one over to you.

We recently purchased an iPhone outright and just use Telstra Pre-pay, if you get the right packs it can work out a lot cheaper than a contract plan with all the bonus minutes and texts they offer you depending on how much you recharge. We previously were with three on a $69.00 contract and the pre-pay works out cheaper overall with Telstra and a lot better coverage and no 'roaming' data charges when three switches networks automatically (that's a whole other story)

I would say 500mb is more than enough for general emails and internet checks, pradopoint.com I assume

Having been through the process recently of upgrading, PM me if you want any more detailed information.

Good for you. The desire looks like a really nice piece of hardware.

Must admit the unlimited internet and email was a selling point! Don't know why other companies don't jump onboard that bandwagon

It just might be a good idea to wait for the Desire V2 anyway:
                    Red faces

The failings of the Desire hit you within minutes of first using it.

Its screen is bright and colourful indoors, but almost unusable in sunlight. This severely hampers all aspects of the phone, from sending texts to web browsing, to taking photos.

The touchscreen intermittently remains active during phone calls and it’s too easy to press the on-screen buttons with your ear. I’ve accidentally hung up on people dozens of times.

Sound quality during calls is noticeably worse than the iPhone. Both the earpiece and the speaker produce a feeble, tinny sound with a background hiss.

Used indoors, the Desire’s vivid screen is great for most apps, but when viewing photos or web sites you realise that the screen is severely over-saturated. People’s faces become beetroot red.
