  • Big Trip Plan- Help.

    Was unsure which section this need to go in so hopefully I got it right.

    Well the planning has started for a mainland trip in two years time when I get long service. We have an idea of a few places we want to go and see and do but just need some help filling in the bits in between. Hopefully will be away for 4-5 weeks. Trying to stay off the sealed surfaces if possible.

    The planning so far;
    Launceston to Melbourne (via boat)
    Melbourne to Ceduna (not sure of a way apart from the black top)
    Googs Track
    Coober Pedy
    Willam Creek
    Flinders Ranges (Sky Trek etc)
    Birdsville

    That is as much as we have come up with so far so if there are any recommendations on things to do/see/ drive would be good or even which order. Really having trouble trying to make it all link up in an order that does not backtrack all the time.

    A couple of options for Melbourne to Ceduna to avoid blacktop are:
    • Grampians[/*:m:cuus2is6]
    • Wyperfield NP or Ngarkat CP[/*:m:cuus2is6]
    • Gawler Ranges NP[/*:m:cuus2is6]

    Based on you wanting to hit Birdsville I would probably do Flinders before Ceduna then do Googs, Coober Pedy, Painted Desert, Oodnadatta then William Creek, Maree and then head to Birdsville via Mungerannie. Following that and depending on time I would then head down via Cordilo Downs to Innaminka OR head north and check out the Dinosaurs.

    Just be aware that if you are taking a camper/caravan or trailer you can not go north from Maree to Birdsville as the ferry will not allow it. You can however head out from Lyndhurst to Innaminka and then north to Birdsville.

      At the moment the Innamincka to Birdsville road is closed yet again. Hope it opens within a few weeks as we are heading out that way.

        Thats a bugger. I thought I saw on Friday that it was open so it's only closed recently.
