I have read this through. Is any one able to let me know if using an Ipad for navigation would be better than an internal dash mounted system? Does the Ipad take an external GPS antenna? What mapping soft where is out their now for them? I have never used a Ipad.
Just wondering if worth paying up to $2000.0 for a double din in car audio/reversing/GPS system or leave the stanard stereo and have an Ipad for those other chores. could you use the Ipad as the top screen to display all the functions of the little car display?

              Cheers

I have both an in dash GPS and the Ipad in my 120. The in dash "dodgy options" is a piece of crap, even the functions that do work aren't any good as the screen is mostly just black unless the sun is behind the clouds, so the Ipad wins hands down on that score. The Ipad screen is also a much better (read bigger) size so thats a bonus as well.

I am a total technophobe and don't like new technology and electronic gizmos as a rule; but I love the Ipad. Multiple uses not just for navigation but great for surfing the net and emails and such. Recently on a trip I got a slight phone signal out in the bush, took a pic of us set up for lunch in the bush, emailed it to a mate (MLC) who I knew was sitting at his desk working.......... that sort of thing is priceless

The Ipad if you get the 3G model doesn't need an external antenna, the GPS is very accurate as it is. Personally I think that dedicated GPS units will go the way of the dinosaurs in the not too distant future, for the money they cost you can almost get the Ipad with the mapping software and it is so much more versatile.

I have multiple mapping options, motionx for about 2 dollars but find we never use that, google maps is useful if you have phone signal, looking at satelite pics of where you are can really help. We also have the VMS (now called mudmaps) and recently got the Hema app as well. Both are good, a recent upgrade to the VMS means it is all different now and I need to relearn how to use it. We flick back and forth between the 2 systems and just use whichever has the best map for the particular spot we are in.

Yep, I am a big fan of the Ipad for navigation, apart from mounting it there are no downsides that I can think of. The 150's seem pretty easy to mount them with the leather cover as Hutch has done, only downside there is it cover the stereo, otherwise ram mounts or custom mounts are the way to go.

                Cheers Andrew

I'm thinking of filling the stocking with the iPad mini. At 7.9 inch it lies between the dodgy op and the iPad. I've been running Hema maps on the dodgy but would like a bigger screen and as AJ says, useless in the sun. Any thoughts out there on the mini or just go with the big bro?

                  Cheers, Jim.

I reckon go for the mini. It's just got to be a whole lot easier to fit in a 120.

Saw one on the plane the other day. ideal size IMO.

I have one (16GB 3G/Wifi)...just wish now I had bought a bigger one. Initially thought I'd just use it for e-mail and browsing, but that added Music and the Hema maps (now called 4WD Australia).....which is plenty for what I do (touring only). I mounted it like Hutch suggested and that worked ok BUT think I will go for a Ram Mount for my CSR trip next year.

One downside is that using Hema maps, and the tracking is that it sucks juice from the I-Pad like crazy, so you need an I-Pad charger for the car, and I also use a 300W Inverter to top up when I am in the bush.

I use Telstra, which has the most coverage in Oz (by far) and just have a $180 prepaid plan which lasts 12 months....as this is only used for browsing and E-mail when I am away from home I probably won't use that anyway but it's the only one that's not a "by the month" plan that Telstra has.

So it's (in my view) a teriffic mobile option.
