  • SA: Border Track May 14th / 15th

All - another SA GTG is in the making. We are on a roll this year!! It will be three in not even 6 months. Whose complaining??

Honestly, I was doing this trip anyway, but why not offer it to the good folk on PP too? It's good to have other cars on trips so all are welcome. The plan is as follows:

    Saturday the 14th of May:
Meet at Pinnaroo BP road house to get permits etc. at 9am.
complete border track through to Red Bluff campsite where we will camp on Saturday night
Sunday, proceed south from Red Bluff, and arrive at Keith around lunch time and head home from there.

These plans are still open to modification. But this is the basic idea.

I have not done this track before, but between those going we should be fine. There are deep bog holes, but the hardest of obstacles all have bypass tracks. Although some people take camper trailers through here, I am not advising it for this trip. There is already a group of 4 cars attending (3 from PP) and we don't wish to be held up. Red Bluff has a drop toilet. No showers are available anywhere.

    Cheers -
    ian.

    Confirmed Attendees from PP:

    AJ120 (+ 0 )
    120D4D (+1)
    Big Trev (+??)
    Noobie (+??)

All cars attending this trip need to be equipped with recovery points, and having your own straps is advised. The first is purely a safety issue for the cars doing the recovery. No tow points allowed. I shouldn't think we'll need any of this unless the rain sets in during the trip :-)

    Good work mate...

I will be start sending emails around the company tomorrow and try to pull out the information regarding when I start on the new rig, flight details, rota list, etc. Which any luck I should have the information I need to confirm or not whether I can attend this trip (and the next)...

On another note - mentioned this trip to Loz a few days ago, had I been home it could have been nasty!

Re: SA: Border Track May 14th / 15th

Count me in for this one. Trish is away all the week before; tripping around the state for work, so she reckons she will give it a miss (no camper trailer made her decision easy) so i will be solo.

I imagine it would be a good idea if everyone coming could bring a bit of firewood as finding any at red bluff will be next to impossible.

I'll meet you all at Pinnaroo. Weather dependant i may even head out on the Friday and do a run down the border track from Noora and camp somewhere along the track Friday night.

      Cheers Andrew

Excellent stuff Andrew. A more detailed plan will be emailed out to attendees closer to the date. And yes; all attending will need to bring firewood as you are not allowed to collect it.

I would be keen to start the track from the north on the Friday if you're keen? Camp at scorpion springs the Friday night and meet others back at pinnaroo sat morning?

Re: SA: Border Track May 14th / 15th

Ok, the information is hot off the press and direct from Egypt...
Join the Stena Forth in the Red Sea, on the 17th of May, for 4 weeks - which will be my "normal" rota.

Effectively, I will be leaving for Egypt on the sunday or monday, not enough time to wash the car ( )and I will not get (understandably) a release from Loz as this trip being on my last weekend at home...

          Not happy!

Re: SA: Border Track May 14th / 15th

Ian you don't get a permit at the Roadhouse. Head west from Pinnarro for about 5 kms and then turn south. Forget the name of the road but it leads into Pine Hut Soak. There is a registration station there as you drive in. It's all self serve with an envelop to put your money (about $7.50 I think per car).

Camping is possible at Pine Soak Hut and that is where I will be doing the trip when I do it in April (Big group with about 14 cars). That has a drop toilet and fire pit. Red Bluff is much bigger with two or three drop toilets and a number of fire pits. There are other locations to camp as well. The bog holes start further south of Red Bluff. There is only one monster hole and if that is full you just don't go near it. Last time I was there it would have been 1600+ deep but I believe there is a track either side of it.

You are not permitted to collect wood in the conservation park but Red Bluff is outside of that (over the border in Vic) so you can there BUT descent fire wood is limited so as Andrew said pick some up on the way. Three bags of wood from Tailem Bend for about $35.00

Nick - someone told me you could get permits at the road house? Maybe that's old news. Do you need a separate permit for red bluff given its over the border??

No permit require for Red Bluff. Maybe you can get a conservation park park pass in the roadhouse but if you have kids like mine then you know it's gonna cost you a lot more than $7.50

Noora where i would go in is due East of Loxton, I would only leave after work on Friday and travel for an hour or so until its dark, I would still be well North of Pinaroo, no where near Scorpion Springs. I would still have to travel for an hour or 2 Saturday morning to make Pinaroo.

                    Cheers Andrew

I may start at the northern tip, and skirt into Murray sunset for a look. Depends on work closer to the time though.

                              Well done Ian

Looks like we will have a good attendance and the opportunity (for me) to meet some known and new faces also!

Just confirming our attendance and watching the post.

Would like to hear from those heading to Pinnaroo from Adelaide Saturday morning for any convoy plans.

On a slightly different matter, you and Dave need to send me your Robe photos and vids. I will get Matt's this weekend (from Loz). Will try to post some pics tonight, just going through the vids for still shots.

                              Regards
