Heading up there this long weekend with some family and friends for the first time. 4 cars all up with varying ability AWD(Rav4), Patriot, Vitara and my Prado. Got plenty of recovery gear between us.
Anyone got any tips or highlights we should be checking out while we're there?

Keep an eye out for the "rat bags" on bikes & 4WD's doing 80klms sideways arround corners. I nearly collected one a while back, in the centre of a track, on a bend. Holiday weekends bring out the idiots!

i took a run up there 2 weeks ago by myself mid week . i only did the easy fire trails as mapped in some of the guides . i went in through yarramalong , through the basin ,forest road , the pines , muirs lookout ,and back down watagan forest road jiliby and wyong . beautiful scenery ,easy tracks but i missed all the good ones . i really want to explore this area but my over riding feeling the closer i got to jiliby and wyong was that i didn't really want to be here on a weekend or holiday period due to their proximity . at this point id usually make a remark about banjo's and squealing like a pig but ill refrain for fear of being shot at next time i go there :lol:

you can't beat just grabbing a topo map (wyong covers the watagans) and just finding tracks that join onto other roads,
and seeing if you can make it.
as others have said, the watagans during holidays is a nightmare due to the drunken idiots being just that. idiots.
we stay well away at these times.
not worth ruining a long week end with that stress, or worse being driven out on a truck.
