  • Fraser Island 4WD tracks

Hi guys, off to Fraser for the first time in a few weeks. Hope this awesome weather holds out.

Just chasing a few 4WD tracks that might be around on the Island other than the beach. Anyone got any info they would like to share?

    Cheers.

GN, when u get your permits you will get a map, their r heaps of tracks to travel on, all the the tracks to all the popular spots are good, ngala rocks north can be tricky depending on the tides but up to orchid beach is a good run, central staion, lake Mackenzie just to name a few. It has been pretty dry so I would expect the tracks to be quite soft and loose. I would suggest start at 18 psi and if u need go down lower maybe 16 but 18 should get u most places in a enjoy!!!
I have few trip reports to Fraser, chech them out, plenty of ideas.

It was a long time since I was there, but the only challenging stuff I recall was when heading to the northern end. Some steeper and soft sand tracks, and some rocks along the beach.

Plenty to see at Fraser check out some of the inland lakes. Be prepared for a few bumps with tree roots protruding a little more with the dry weather the sand tends to fall away on the downhill side. Also watch out for the washouts where the creeks run out to the sea they can be hard to see sometimes.
Have a look at the Derm site http://www.derm.qld.gov.au/register/p01663aa.pdf conditions report to see what roads and tracks are closed, it will also give you the tide times so you know the best time to be travelling the beach near Low tide is best.

Do GPS work on the FI tracks? I've heard the maze of overlapping tracks can be hard to negotiate and the maps are be difficult to interpret which track you are on.

The lake Garawongera track is beautiful and easily accessible. ...No lake compares to McKenzie, but the drive is great fun and beautiful. not too overgrown when I was there in July, but maybe worth taking a chainsaw?

My next trip I hope to check out the northern forrests drive and walk down through valley of the giants, but need to add some maxtrax and a UHF to my inventory first! Looking forward to trying my new rubber on the sand...should be good after only having used grand treks over there before

Shame I can't spend the $ till after my wedding in a few weeks or I'd otherwise be happy to show you round overthere. I've only been driving offroad for about 6 months so bit of a nube. But have found fraser to be great fun with the odd challenge here and there for someone like me.
