Hi all,
Well, having the Victorian High Country only a couple of hours from my suburb proved far too appealing when my boss told me to use some of my ADO's! I jumped on the phone and found some keen mates (Darren in the Hilux, Justin&Sharon in their 100 with kids and camper as well as Mick & Shona in the red Jeep) and we took the Friday off work and met at the Lanwarry servo to fuel/meet up at 9am.
First stop was Moe because one of Justin&Sharons kids forgot their gumboots. Luckily Aussie Disposals had them on sale and I let my puppy out for a break.
Next stop was Thompson Dam for a quick look around, an early lunch and air down. We were headed for O'Tools Flat to make camp. I jumped in the passenger seat at this stage to let the missus take us to camp. I knew the track was pretty easy but with the rain it was interesting in places, so it was a good first experience for her! Our brand spanking new BFG All Terrains worked a treat too!
There was a sign at the Alberfeldy River telling us that the road was closed so we headed to a different campsite (cannot for the life of me remember its name!?) that wasnt as open or nice as O'Tools but had plenty of space, walking distance to the river and had some toilets, so there were no complaints.
We did cross the river and came back again just so Jenny could have a crack at a water crossing.
My Ladies:
We setup camp and I got the sheppards pie (my specialty) on the go after collecting some firewood and generally enjoying being at camp on a friday while everyone else was working :P
It was a chilly night but the swags we just picked up and the awning kept the frost off us and I was "lucky" enough to share with Punter (the puppy).
The next morning we cooked up some bacon & eggs and about 10am headed out for an explore after loosly planning to tackle Flats Track and making a loop back to camp.
This took us back to the Alberfeldy where we chatted to a bloke in a Paj that came down the other side, he said the track was in good shape and dry, while we were chatting, some bozo in this 80 series moved the Road Closed sign and charged across
So he had to winched out
We headed up the open track towards Flats track and I gotta say - I am glad I have new rubber! Some amazing downhills and rocky sections and a few belly scrapes but we made it through to O'Tools, let the dogs have a run and made lunch.
We came down the Fire Trail - this was perhaps the steepest section of the trip, I came down last, Prado being the most capable vehicle and all! but first gear low and alot of brakes made me nervous!
We made it back to camp and cooked up a feed and got an early night. There was a decent frost that night and I woke up coz of the cold. Nature was also calling so I got up and the pup ran to the bottom of the swag! He wanted nothing to do with the cold! sook!
Anyway, we casually packed up and headed out just after lunch on the Sunday morning. We went into Walhalla via Steep Track (not very steep) before trekking back to town.
Was an awsome weekend, I just LOVE the High Country and I love that it is so close to home!
