I just got back from a couple of nights at Sorell Lake on the way back went for a look around Arthurs Lake not knowing the area at all and being on my own I was not going to go to far down tracks but am keen to explore that area, and Powerhouse Bay looks like a nice place to camp if any one is up for an overnighter. Suggestion only as I dont know the area at all and I am sure there are plenty of other places that are better.

Plenty of tracks around the lakes. SInce I work for a company that has a power station up there I have a key that gets through most boom gates so if ever going up there again contact me and we could make a day of it exploring.

Still waiting on others to decide when they want to go for a day trip around Mathinna if that is where we all still want to go.

Sorry Guys - this one kind of fell off the radar with playing with the new toy and all...

I am kind of on a week to week thing at the minute with a few things on, a date I can make this week might be out next week, so don't count me in on any particular date. If I can make it I will be there with bells on, but I wont get involved in dates.

The lakes are an interesting proposition at the minute, the waters are the highest this year they have been for ages. We used to camp at Jonah bay, I haven't been up this year but I am told a lot of the camp ground at Jonah Bay is under water.

        Cheers

I know its only a week away, but id be all good for the 23rd Oct for a day trip with family, me & wifey, 5yo boy, 3yo girl & 6 month old, would really be interested in finding the old bunkers if anyone knows the tracks, or doing any other tracks around the lakes if anyone knows of some good day trips, that way i could try and land the big one on the way home.... Mathina looks good to, fair way for the day from Penguin but if thats where it is im all good.

          cheers

If we can hold off on the bunker trip a bit, I have a contact who is willing to show us the way. We all just need to make a date in the future and try and stick to it.
As for the 23rd October I will get back to you all later on over the weekend. Plenty of tracks to explore around the lakes. Lake Augusta could be a good drive to see how full it is.

Been away and missed this one.

Just a word of caution on the bunkers - the good old "Ruin it for everyone" brigade has made 4wds pretty unwelcome in the area. Not saying your source isn't legit VK, just a warning for others.

I have done a HEAP of research on these and can tell you exactly where they are and how to get there. They are on a private property known as "Circle Marshes" which is one of the oldest properties in the Highlands, and contains a lot of other interesting things to look at as well as the bunkers. It is surrounded by a private property (GowanBrae - also a historic farming property) state forest, and a property formerly owned by Gunns, now Jan Cameron's conservation trust. From what I can tell most people go in through the state forest and then just cross into the site which is just 100m or so over the state forest boundary. The problem is apparently there have been several groups of what I had described to me as "Rouge 4WD Groups" go through and do a fair bit of environmental damage, particularly around the Pine river crossing. As a result there have been fences, boom gates and "obstacles" put in to block access. The irony is, the site is at the end of reasonably well formed gravel road, only about 10kms down a road off the Marlborough Highway - it just has about 4 boom gates along the way. I have had it made clear to me in no uncertain terms a few times now that the chances of me getting in the legitimately are pretty slim. Anyone interested can find pretty much all the info they need on the 1:25 000 "Olive" tasmap.

Happy to share info with anyone interested.

Will see how I go with the weekend, but reckon I will struggle.

                  Cheers

Hi all, any thoughts on a trip? We would be keen. Getting close to Xmas is going to start ruling out a few weekends.

Hi guys. We've just bought our first 4x4, so are keen to do something fairly tame. I'm based just south of Hobart.

Are these events generally family affairs? I'd love to do a trip with my clan (primary school aged kids), if the atmosphere is appropriate.

                          G'day Snowguide,

Us Tassie guys have'nt had a great deal of trips, but have planned a few, all with the best intentions of all. We had a good little meet up last year at miena, and the Intension is to have more. It is the time, planning and most of all commitment to a date that has prevented more activity. Based on the last catch up at Miena, most definetly a famiy affair works best for all.

I am mooting an east coast jaunt, perhaps mid Jan for the next suggestion. Any Takers ?

I'll be interstate for Jan, but don't let that stop the rest of you. I think in these matters you really just need to get a couple of people, set a date and go. Those who can join will, those who can't can do it another day.
