  • Simpson Desert trip Sept 2011

    Hi All,

A couple of quick questions regarding the Simpson West to East travel:

For those who have completed the trip would you do it with only one vehicle?
Would the floods from QLD still be affecting the river crossing that is on the trip?
Would mid Sept be a good time to travel or too late?

    Thanks

Edit: Helps if I get the year right....

What are you doing organizing a trip in Sept when the SA GTG is happening Seriously though the trip should be awesome and going with a decent group of like minded travellers where there will be heaps of support is priceless. Also all the groundwork is under control by all the recce's being done leading up to the trip
Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

I did the trip last year in July and we just called the Mt Dare Hotel to see if the tracks were open, Unfortunately for us there was still to much water coming down. I think by September you should be ok.

keep an eye on these sites

            http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quick...oads/area2.asp

We went East to west Sept last year

There seemed to be enough traffic through the area so help should be available but take a HF radio or sat phone/spot

broken vehicles we saw or heard about was a patrol ute with a cranked chassis, landcruiser ute with broken tray and either a Prado/Pajero or Pathfinder (we heard of) had fuel pump issues and was being dragged out by convoy members to Birdsville (cheaper than the recovery vehicle)

Cater for an extra 4 hours to get around Eyre creek if the diversion is in place, then again there was a great looking campsite beside the water (was already taken) when we passed.

Temp wise is was about 33 in Birdville and Dalhousie when we went through but 37 and 39 in the desert. Fuel wise I used about 95 litres of diesel (I think) averaging 16 l/100 day 1 and 22 to 24 on day 2 (according to my car's fuel chart)

Thanks for all of the replies. Josh did you do it on your own or in a convoy?
