  • Laura to Maytown via The Old Coach Road

Did the Old Coach Road from Laura to Maytown last weekend, bit of an iconic NQ track like the Old Telegraph Track and CREB Track.
It goes from the old Palmer River ghost town of Maytown, through to Jowalbinna campground 30kms from Laura on the Peninsular Development Road. Fairly tough going, bit over 6 hours to do the 43kms, tyres at 22PSI the whole way. Always wanted to do it, since my old man went in there in the 70's in his Holden powered Landrover and had heaps of mechanical dramas. Fortunately we had none and no damage. Would have liked some grippier tyres then my Bridgestones for the loose steep bits.

The Toyota crowd, two Prados anyway.

Top of one of a couple of steep solid rock ledges, on the track.

    Creek crossing and exit.

    Rocky road.

What did u find wrong with your Bridgestone tyres... They look like D694 ones.... I've just bought a set and was hoping that they would be OK in those sort of road conditions......

BTW.... Great Pics, I was up there in '87 but did the track in reverse (From Laura to Maytown)

They went fine, just not as grippy as the others vehicles with S/T's and Kumho muddies, totally expected, only in the loose stuff on the steep climbs that needed some momentum they seemed to struggle. If I did this sort of stuff every weekend, I would have muddies and 70 series tyres for a touch more ground clearance, don't know how much though at 20 PSI LOL. Bridgstones are good tyres for the money, $450 for Mickey T's and Poopers is a bit rich for me, remember they are a lot dearer up in Cairns, like everything. Though having said that, I will look hard at Cooper S/T Maxx next time, the 100 Series has them and they seem to go really well. Cheers
