  • Return to Wombat state forrest

Anthony & Steve johno went back to wombat for an easy trip to test out Anthony's new gearbox, which was fitted only hours before trying out a few tracks, plenty of bogholes around, slippery in places but nothing too extreme, just a nice day for a drive.
last minute trip too late to be posted. Hope to get another trip going soon.

Yeah, thanks for coming out Steve, what a ripper of a day for it hey.
The replacement box and new clutch worked very well.
See you on the next one in a few weeks.

Anthony - what brand clutch did you put in? I'm looking at doing mine on the 1kz.

I put the 3rd Exedy in 12 months.
I had trouble with shudder on the first 2, 3rd time lucky maybe?

I would recommend using Toyota genuine as they last forever and don't cause grief.
I was quoted $480 for the genuine that's not to bad.
You will find aftermarket not much cheaper.

On the other hand if u don't mind some shudder :-) I can sell u my 4000klm Exedy with a shudder for $250, that includes a brand new thrust bearing.
There is no wear, it bench tested well within spec, they don't really know why I had a shudder......

You went Exedy again, despite the chatter on the first two? Had a quick google and seems like this is common for exedy clutches. Toyo genuine might be the go....

I'm not going to pay for another $500 clutch till the first one is worn out (wear&tear) it's all warranty, although it was very hard work getting coverage.
It is my belief from the reasearch i have done genuine is the go! If u dont want a bit of shudder.
Other than that id try a CI, possibly a 4terrain.
I personally fitted the 3rd and last Exedy so it has every chance of being ok.
If this one shudders soon, I will put it down to a characteristic of a Exedy clutch in a Prado.
It is smooth as so far!

Also I believe it is a problem with the pivot springs on the clutch plate,
Its my suspicion only that some components like those may be getting made in china.....
I'm being very gentle to this one for as long as I can, if it gets a workout offroad and then a shudder starts then I will know it cannot handle the low range forces.

At least they're honoring their warranty. My wife drops the clutch all the time so a shudder would drive her mad!!

If I could change the clutch myself I'd be tempted to give one of your other ones a go. My suspicion is that my issue is the thrust bearing mainly, as it only appears when real cold, and the first few depressions of the clutch. But, given i've done 150k, it would be wise to change the whole lot whilst the box is out!

Yep at 150k thats what i would do too.
The update is 2 weeks later, no clutch shudder at all, even after 2 4x4 trips so we cant blame that.
This is the smoothest clutch i have evr used!
Looks like if you need a clutch you guys in vic should get me to do it :-)
