  • Bribie Island

The minister for war & finance has a function on at Caboolture on 15 Sept, so I thought while she is there I might as well go and have some fun over at Bribie. I have done a reasonable amount of driving at Fraser & Cooloola so i'm no stranger to beach & sand, but this will be my first time to Bribie. I was wondering if anyone has been recently who might be able to give me some idea of conditions. I want to head up to the old bunkers. A friend who was there about a year ago said the lagoons are now open to the sea and require crossing deep salt water even at low tide. That doesn't sound very appealing to me so if that's still the case, I'd probably prefer the inland road, although it is probably soft and tough going. Anyone with recent experience of either route?
I'll be there from about 1 to 5, low tide is about 3, so tide is favorable for the beach.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

I was there 2 weekends ago. The inland track had some soft sections but wasn't that bad. There were no water crossings at all.

Thanks heaps Brains. Don't suppose you did the beach too and know if it is still the case about the salt water crossings?

Was on the beach last wed I think... easy as with no crossings on the beach. With the lack of rain the lagoons are full but not overflowing so none of them were flowing to the ocean.

Thanks heaps Snaga. That sounds good. I have no dramas crossing shallow fresh water (like the East coast creeks at Fraser), but crossing salt water is a definite no-no. If there's no water at all, that's even better. I might do a circuit, go up the beach & back the inland road to see a bit more of the island. I just hope the weather stays dry between now and then. Opportunities to get out are few and far between lately, so I'm looking forward to it, even if it will be only a few of hours of playtime.

The fam and I went to Bribie on Sunday the 16th - up the inland track then down the beach. There were a few vehicles bogged on the inland track - it was as soft as I'd seen it - as well as a soft roader that busted a timing belt and was waiting for the RACQ. We bogged when coming around a corner to find the track full of vehicles in various states of recovery and lost momentum. I self recovered with the shovel and Maxtrax - the kids thought it was fun

We camped up at the 3rd Lagoon which was nice until two truck loads of bogans rocked up and blasted us with death metal. I wandered over and asked them to turn it off and got abused for my trouble, but they did turn it down and then pissed off about 15 mins later and we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon.

Rob the first two cars (one was an Altitude) seemed to be running close to road pressures, the little AWD hadn't but was dropping them when we came around, and as for us I must admit I was a bit lazy and had only dropped to 25psi but then dropped them to 16psi after becoming stuck. I probably would have been right if I didn't lose momentum but there were some pretty sofr patches.

With regards to the Maxtrax I've used them a few times on myself and others now and have burnt a few lugs off - however they are a great bit of kit and i was the only vehicle I saw on the day that was able to self recover..

It amazing the number of people that dont drop their pressures on sand.
Hats off to you, I bet you they were jealously eyeing off your maxtrax!

Thanks Trev. As it turned out, I only had an hour free time on Saturday arvo. I figured it wasn't worth buying a permit for such a short time, and ended up staying on the black stuff. I have however booked in to camp at Poverty for the October long weekend.

Now that I've booked, I guess it will give me incentive to fix my tent that suffered a bit of damage in the wind & rain when I was at Fraser at Easter time.

Poverty looks good for a weekend or overnighter - we had morning tea there and might pop up for a camp at some stage ourselves.
The tent camping area allows fires but for some reason the CT area doesn't...
