  • The Mallee Drive 2012

I had to write up a report for my club mag, so I thought I would load it up here. Big Desert is a nice area that not many people get to see.

    The Mallee Drive – 1st to 5th October 2012

The second Monday of the September/October school holidays saw the beginning of The Mallee Drive trip for 2012. This trip was listed as a “Child Friendly” but my kids, Kate and Alexandra (Alex) were the only young ones. This year we met at the service station near the Calder Park Raceway. We arrived just after 9.30am and Chris was already waiting with his Land Cruiser and it was not long before we were joined by Ian with his Pathfinder and Neville and his Patrol. We got on the road a short time later and with a few stops along the way we arrived at Rainbow, Vic, at about 3pm where we topped up with fuel before heading into the national park.

From Rainbow we headed east and entered the Wyperfeld National Park at Pella track. Within 5m of the park entrance we stopped to air down with thick soft sand in all directions. We then headed north staying on Pella Track for a short time prior to turning onto Milmed Rock Track. With all getting a bit tired by this stage we turned into an area called Hermies Garden to camp for the night. Although Hermies Garden does not have any facilities like some of the other camping areas, it is a lovely place to spend an evening looking at the stars and a great place for the first night away.

Before we saw the sun come up over out tents, the birds let us know that it was time to get the coffee on. After a relaxing morning and pack up, we continued along Milmed Rock Track. The first of the sand dunes gave us a chance to get the blood pumping a bit faster and for some of us it was a first real experience with sand. All vehicles made it over the top, but for some a couple of goes were required, trying different gear options. By the end of the day everyone was having no issues with the sand and finding the ever changing environment a joy to travel. We then headed to Big Billy Bore camp site for lunch with shade being one of the big concerns. Having left the low temperatures of Melbourne behind, the heat of the Mallee area was a nice change and sunscreen and hats were required. We continued along a number of tracks until about 4.30pm when we arrived at the town of Murrayville. Murrayville was picked due to the simple and clean camping area that also gave us access to showers and a chance to clean up.

The Wednesday morning saw another slow start. With fresh bread being available at the general store from 9.30am we took our time getting ready prior to continuing our journey north and into the Murray-Sunset National Park. Once we turned onto Firebreak Track on the southern edge of the park there was a lot of evidence that feral animals were an issue for local property owners, with quite a number of dead goats along the fence lines. We then travelled from west to east across the park traveling on Sunset Track. This made for an easy drive and chance to check out the wildlife, unfortunately there were more goats than native animals in this area.

Later that day we arrived at Mt Crozier Camping Area and set up for the night. The walk to the top of the mountain was not too long and although not a high mountain, given the flat ground surrounding the area, it did give a great view. After returning to the camp we learnt that the one thing that outnumbered the goats in the area were the ferrel bees. A large group of bees took over anything that contained water and a wash bowl and jerry can between Chris’ vehicle and tent became covered. The bees remained for several hours with me being the only one stung, but this was enough for Alex to run to the tent and not want to come out. They moved away as the sun went down and plans were made for the morning. Expecting the bees to return early we ensured that everything that could be was packed up that night was and we made plans for an early departure.

Thursday morning began and we packed up whilst the kids sat inside car. We were on the tracks before the rest of us could eat breakfast, just as the bees returned and we headed south to Lake Hardy. There were a few historic things to look at in this area, but most of us were more interested in a coffee and having something to eat. Shortly after this we arrived at the town of Underbool. The local coffee shop was a nice change to camp food and the kids enjoyed an ice cream.

Continuing south and back into Wyperfeld National Park saw the return of kangaroos and numerous lizards. The goats do not appear to have made it to this area. We then circled the Wirrengren Plain before arriving at Snow Drift Picnic Area. This picnic area is located at the base of the largest sand dune in the area and the pure white sand is a beautiful site. Local kids had surfboards to ride down the sand but the climb was too much for most of us to try. Lunch was enjoyed until the scream! There were very few bees in this area but Alex had managed to find one. Once the sting was removed and medicine was applied, she stayed in the car and we watched to see how she would react. Being her first bee sting we did not know how she would go.

We continued south on Eagle Track and North South Track and saw the sand return and the need to keep up momentum to make it through. It took a bit of work to keep the vehicles going straight but the smile on Ian’s face when we stopped for a quick break was a good sign that everyone was having fun. Neville was running a bit higher tyre pressure than the rest of us and as a result needed a bit more momentum. We decided that he should be renamed “Lead Foot Neville” as he came flying out of the sand on one of the longer stretches.

That evening was the last for our trip and saw us make camp at Wonga Ground Campsite. This was a large and open area and a nice place to relax around the fire and talk about the tracks travelled and to plan our next Mallee Drive trip in 2014.

Nice part of the world there. Interesting to hear about the bees! We live only 30k from Sunset so its our backyard, haven't ever had an issue with bees out there before.

Did you by chance stop in at the Lodge in Wyperfield? Pretty amazing place considering where it is.

I must get back out to that area and try some of the places we haven't made it to yet, such as Milmed Rock and around to Lake Albacutya.

        Cheers Andrew

Looks like a fun trip Smakb. Did you follow the trip notes of the actual mallee drive, or just make up your own? Re the bees, they were a bit of a problem at Red Bluff where we camped on whatever night it was. They swarmed Gramps' tent because it was moist. Anyway, I made a bit of a crater in the sand and filled it with water. After this, they just swarmed the sand puddle I made and left most of us alone.
          Diesel Prado with various things...

We followed most of the Mallee Drive, but cut off the top section, cutting through the middle of Murray-Sunset NP instead of going over the top. To be honest, I thought Murray-Sunset was crap compared to Wyperfeld NP and in the next trip we will stay in Wyperfeld.

For the next trip I am thinking of going up Milmed Tk, up to Murrayville, down Border Tk, across Bluff Tk and Chinaman Well Tk. That will be in 2014 as I am doing the Simpson in my September break next year.

We got the bees at Mt Crozier and we later saw warning signs about the bees further south. I think the warning signs were in the area of Lake Hardy.

I am not sure about the Lodge. Is that the farm/property in the middle of the park where the camels are?

Yep that's the one, would be a brilliant place to stay if you want some luxury in the bush.

Don't like luxury, causes me to spend money that I should/could spend on beer or mods
