  • NSW/VIC/ACT Alpine camping 25th/26th May (THIS WEEKEND)

There's fresh snow on the mountain tops this week, so I'm heading to Mt Pinnibar for some light snow driving and fantastic views. Mt Pinnibar's altitude is 1729m, and situated just nearby Tom Groggin, at the NSW/VIC border.

I'll be arriving there very early Saturday morning, camping near an Alpine hut on Saturday night, and leaving Sunday afternoon.

If you'd like to join in, please express your interest here or via PM, and I'll provide more details.

    Notes:
    - Temperatures are expected to be between -5 and 2 degrees, which will feel more like -15 when exposed to heavy wind on the mountain tops, so snow/ski clothing is absolutely required.
    - Butane cookers will not function at these temperatures.
    - Conditions on the roads will be slippery, expect black ice on the tarmac and mud and snow in the bush tracks, so MT/AT tyres, a winch and recovery gear is required.
    - Consider if your engine fluids are suitable for cold weather, and a healthy starting battery is recommended

Mega jealous as its my favourite 4WDing and camping destinations! The tracks from Tom Groggin to Mt Pinnibar are very steep and clay based so if the terrain is wet I'd think twice about going up there by yourself! Make sure you check out Geehi whilst you are over there, up the road from Tom Groggin, which is probably one of the best camping grounds in the region (NSW side of the boarder).

Definitely will be interested in coming along when I eventually get the new rig!

The snow has reduced significantly so the trip is postponed. Hopefully the conditions will "improve" over the next couple weekends.

                Thanks Fungi2003
I've been up those tracks many times and yes I know it can get slippery, especially at the start of the track near Tom Groggin. There's a steep/rutted out clay section which has caught both myself and a friend off guard. Just a tiny sprinkle makes it too slippery to climb, and reversing down a clay track with big ruts is not fun! When I go, I'll be expecting to use a winch to avoid track damage.

When is the new rig coming along?

                      Hey Kav,
Yes, I'm hoping to go on one of the next couple weekends before the gates are locked on the 13th of June (can be locked earlier if conditions change dramatically). You're welcome to join in. Keep in mind snow chasing is the priority so I could go either weekend, with my decision being made on the Thursday of each week, based on forecasts
