Kaputar wasn't an intended destination, just a place we thought we'd stop for the night. Thought I'd post, since not so many people seem to head out this way, and we thought it was terrific. Mt. Kaputar itself is a bit of eroded volcano, and I could have spent a lot more time exploring.. You can get up to the park with 2WD, but for the summit, 4WD is better/necessary if its been wet (it had been), but its not difficult.
A local advised us to explore Waa Gorge, also part of the Park, but accessed from the Narrabri-Bingara road, then dirt roads to Terry Hie Hie Creek long dirt roads and then through farms (lotta gates) to the Waa Gorge part of the park. For some reason, they say "no camping allowed" -- too bad, as it would be a great place to spend the night. Its a short hike up to waterfalls and pools, then a longer one into the Gorge itself.
A hardcore 4WD track exists entering the Park from the West, road was closed, the bit we explored was challenging -- steep and rocky-- and locals told us that the closed part is much harder. You need to get a key to the gate from NP in Barraba . . . would be worth it for folks looking for challenging 4WD
Date: June 2013. Weather: cool at the top, cloudy with some rain-- there'd been snow at the top earlier.
