  • TRIP REPORT : Norway

    Howdi guys,

well I'm hangin out in Norway at the moment, my old mans health is a not good and one of the treatment options involves me so here i am in Sunny Olso! Snowed last night so that's a bit different to the 30+ degrees that we left behind a week ago and at approaching 9:30am, the sun's just come up, clouds have cleared and it's a balmy 0.2 degrees according to the cheapo thermometer i bought to work out if it's too cold to take the little fella outside! Lucky the Australian open final is on eurosport!

Surprising number of Prado's on the road here given the cost of ownership. check this page out from Toyota Norway

for comparison, AUD to NOK is roughly 1:5 so that entry level 6 speed manual D4D standard = around $133,600 AUD (i think that includes the rego of about $1500 though if i read the text under it correctly).. Though there are ways to bring the price down, i'm told if you register it as a commercial vehicle, rip out all bar the front 2 seats and change the number plate to a green one so people know that you're only allowed 2 people in there and the price drops significantly.

and with petrol and diesel at roughly $2 to $2.50 a litre (despite the incredible amount of Oil that is produced here) it's not a cheap place to hang out! bought a local beer at a pub the other day for $12, at first i was wondering why people were paying for their drinks with credit cards!

Saw this beauty out on the road when i was shopping yesterday (read that as standing outside the shops in 2 degrees (it was warm yesterday) with the little fella and Pram (and every other bloke + pram) while Michelle (and all the other blokes wives) was shopping)

looks like it's been off to that icelandic conversions place! from what i can tell after a bit of googling, Autofil is a Norwegiean/Swedish car program similar to top gear, there are a few vids on utube of mad norwegians.

it takes a bit of getting used to the cars around, where in brissy the roads are full of holdens, toyotas and fords, over here, 4 out of every 5 cars is either a Volvo, Audi, Peugeot or Mercedes, (99% of taxis are volvo's or merc's)

anyways, just thought I'd throw in a bit more international flavour! I am missing the ability to wander out the front of the house and jump in the Prado for a cruise! will have to get out and about a bit to catch up when i get back.

You lucky bugger McBain, I would love to be in Norway at any time of the year.

It is the land of my ancestry. My great grandfather came from Norway around the Sandefjord area. He was a blacksmith on a whaler.

    Cheers

              You in Oslo?
I loved Norway when I was there in '95. Travelled as far up as Tromso!

              Would love to go back.

                    Re: Norway

                    McBain,

Jealous of your location if not your situation. Hope all goes well.

If you get over the harbour you can visit Thor Heyerdahl's Ra and KonTiki exhibits. There's also a great Viking ship museum in the area, although last time I heard about it a new building was in progress in another location so it might have moved already... Also worth visiting the Royals up on top of the hill - don't hassle the guards they are serious if you step out of line

We liked Oslo. Not too big, nice facilities and a lot of character. Didn't pay any attention to prices as we were on holiday and didn't want to ruin it.

Wow nice! We are going to Iceland later this year and I can't wait to swim in those geothermal pools they've got there. I'm hanging out to do some dog sledding and have a shot one one of those ski-doo thingo's. Not Norway but in a similar neck of the woods. Just seeing who I can borrow some cold weather gear off at the moment. Looks fantastic there. Hope your Father pulls through.
