Some of the best beach driving on the coast up that way. From SWR, drop onto the beach at the back of Smokey Cape, go down to Hat Head for lunch, or continue to Crescent.... then the inside track to Port if you really have a bit of time.

Stayed at port Macquarie, Did a lot of beach fishing up there 20 years go, we drive up & down the beaches for weeks.
Growse fishing & pretty easy sand driving back then. Not sure now.
      Have a good time.

Whats the access and legalities like for the beach in that area now?

We camped at Hat Head caravan park last summer. I didn't have my Prado then, but a few people mentioned that theres a bunch of rangers that don't like people driving on our the beaches. Apparently theres been a few words exchanged, etc. We did see vehicles on the beach but no rangers, so might be all BS.

Been driving the beaches up there for 20 or so years.....Great 4WDing, Great Surfing, Great fishing...... Paradise. Yes the Rangers are there and Police it pretty vigilantly, Just make sure you have a current 'Beach Driving Permit' around $50 (for 12mths) from any of the Caravan Parks or Local stores.

PS: Absolutely love Hat Head Park..... The Creek in summer is fantastic for the kids, and not a bad little surf break
