  • Abercrombie River NP Easter 2014

Planning on going to Abercrombie River NP at easter.

We will be leaving Thursday arvo we plan to setup camp at bummeroo ford. I know we can get in with a van if we get there early.

We have camped there before with 2wd only so this will be the first time we can venture into the actual park.
Spent last easter there watching people in 4wd go out for the day wishing i had a 4wd again.
Well i got the Prado back in January so ready to go this time.
Australia day weekend was our first trip to Stewarts crossing (aka Charleyong Crossing) on the Shoalhaven River.
Great weekend for the first trip in the Prado had been there before.

    Back to the Plan
We are planning to make day trips into the NP proper each day.
Come back to camp then have a few drinks.

From what I have found should be able to do a lot of the places in the park with a stock Prado.
Any suggestions on places to go in the park welcomed.

If anyone is planning to be in the area it would be good to meet up with some of the people on here.

You should have fun there Fred. I've done most of the park in a stock Prado. It was my nerves that gave out not the Prado on one steep climb. The Southern Perimeter is the only spot a stock Prado will struggle. All the rest should be fine.

    Enjoy.

      Corigator thanks.
I have seen there are quite a few steep assents and descents that's was were I was thinking a stock Prado might have trouble.
As per your info I will steer clear of the southern perimeter.

Thanks for the heads up about the NP, I'd never heard of it. I'm always keeping an eye out for places close to home for a quick weekend away, this seems to fit the bill. I'll be keen to hear how you find it. There's a youtube of an overloaded Hyundai iX35 struggling through the park but I am sure the Prado will cope

We've already got plans for Easter on the South Coast though.

          Hi,

I also agree that most of the park you'll have no trouble in a stock Prado, only area that I can think that might be a challenge is the North Eastern entrance / exit. That entrance gets closed when it's too wet (very steep and decent drop offs to the side), some good tires and you should be fine. If it's dry then you'll have no trouble at all.

I dragged my camper trailer with the Prado to Silent Creek campground when it was stock, I did come in the north western entrance to make it easier (we scouted out the Beach Campground with the trailer too).

It's a ripper mate, depends which way you go. I take the Bald Hill Fire trial I think from memory and it's quite rough going in some bits. Otherwise plenty of other trails around. If there is a lot of rain the river crossings can come up a bit, however i've done the 'hard' trail with a stock jeep cherokee (didn't break down either which was odd) and he aced it all, with city tyres.

Thanks for the info from all.

To be honest really looking forward to this trip.
I have the extended break until ANZAC weekend.
So not sure where to go after that
Maybe stay and get some more beer an catch a few more yabbies.

had a great time at abercrombie.
                thanks again for the info.
spent a few days there most was quite easy.
had to turn back on the Little bald hill fire trail, we entered it from Bald hill fire trail.
Red sticky clay under the hard surface and once you broke it was very slippery from the recent rain.
have seen others report sliding down it backwards so I didn't push my luck
silent creek fire trail was closed due to the rain washing it out.

hope to head back and do the rest of the park.
Maybe June or October long weekend.

Sounds good Fred, thanks for the update.

I haven't been through there for quite a while. If I recall correctly little bald hill runs around the edge of a property, it's a bit rough and has some off camber angles. Was almost easy at the time but I could tell it'd be really nasty in wet weather. See you on the tracks one day.
