  • Suggestions for day trip around Brisbane north side

    Hi guys,

I'm upgrading my AWD to a Prado. Delivery is end of the month so getting excited!

Any suggestions for where I should take it first?
It will be my first real off-road experience so not too extreme, but a little bit more than just gravel roads would be nice.

I was thinking about Mt Mee? Or Glass house mountains? Any place I particular in the Glass House mountains that is good?
A weekend on Fraser is already in the works for later in the year, as is a 4wd course at landcruiser park.

I live on the north side of BNE, close to Brendale.

    Thanks

Welcome DDK. Good Choice on the prado. Any of those choices would be a good bet as long as you're sensible. Most of those tracks are fine in dry weather but become very slippery after rain. If you're just starting out, pick a weekend after a nice dry spell and go explore. Alternatively, keep an eye on this thread as we do trips around brisbane reasonably regularly which you're more than welcome to tag along on. Some of the guys on here taught me a lot about 4wding on trips I went with them on.

If you don't find something you like and you're keen to get out, feel free to post here and see if anyone else is keen. Even if all you do is pick up another novice, at least you've got 2 cars if you get into a jam. You'd be surprised though, most of us don't need much of an excuse to go for a run.

Branch creek road near Woodford is a good mix of hills, sometimes a little muddy, always good scenery through dry forest then rainforest. Suitable for a non lifted vehicle if you take it easy.

Takes about an hour from Stoney creek day use area to get back onto the "main" trail which is doable in a 2wd vehicle. Otherwise Black Hut rd out the back of Charlie Morelands campground has creek crossings which should be fun without being dangerous this time of yesr and a hill climb, leads back to Kenilworth.

Finally anything north of Kilcoy headed towards Jimna is good fun and you can pick which track is suitable pretty quickly.

Let us know how you get on!

Tiny' s got it in one. Drop a hat and most of us will be out the gate and locked in low range before you can blink an eye :-) I go out by myself a lot and I find mt mee has enough challenges to keep you entertained. Most if it's pretty easy but there are some good bits(A break and some of the side tracks are good fun) Perfect for a first time outing. Grab yourself a copy of dirty weekends as well. Great resource for whats available around brissie and the Gold Coast. Safe driving and hope to see you on the tracks....

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

          Welcome aboard DDK.
Mount Mee is a nice pleasant drive and a good place to familiarize yourself with the new vehicle "A Break" is enjoyable and as Shangus mentioned some of the sides tracks can be fun but more locked gates nowadays .
I was actually out there all day today with the family for a BBQ and some 4wding. It's very dry and dusty up there at the moment.

Glasshouse has lots of different levels, from easy gravel tracks to extreme.
Keep any eye out here for trip planning or just post up you want to go for a drive, Lots of people are always keen
          Cheers
