  • SEQ – Weekend at Moreton Island Sat 26th - Mon 28th July 2014

TRIP CANCELLED - No slots on the the return Ferry

We have been meaning to do a SEQ PradoPoint beach 4wding trip for a while and a great opportunity has come along. MICAT is running a special for the month of July only. It has reduced its fee to Moreton Island to $100 return for a 4wd and 2 passengers (extra adults in that vehicle though are $50 and children $35). This is a substantial saving off the normal cost to get to Moreton island and has not been that cheap for a very long time.
The fare is not valid leaving on a Friday and returning on a Sunday though as that is peak time so that why it has to be Sat - Mon. So you need the Monday off work.
The tentative plan to take the Prados over on the Saturday morning, spend the weekend camping, fishing, 4wding, relaxing, once we know numbers we can lock in spaces on the ferry next week.
There are plenty of trip reports for you to read on the forum of what this fantastic island has to offer. Also Hema and 4wd action recently did trips there which you can look up.
We have a few options of where to camp, good ones include Northpoint, Blue Lagoon or Ben Eva but can decide on that later but for now we will need to get the ferry booked. I will post up the camp site plan on Monday and check total spots left available then.

It will be good to kick back with a beer or two in front of the fire for a catch-up as usual. If you’re interested in joining us put your name down below so we can check spaces early next week (we cant see how much is left online) , it’s always good to meet some of the new SEQ PP faces and catch up with the regulars.

Date: Saturday 26th to Monday 28th of July 2014.
    UHF: Channel 16
Time: Leave Brisbane Port MICAT ferry at 8.30am Saturday 26th. Camping Saturday and Sunday night and leaving on the 3.30pm Monday Ferry from the wrecks back to Brisbane. Arrive Brisbane Port about 5pm
    Location: Moreton Island.
Difficulty Level: 4/10. This is a weekend of sand /beach driving. Not difficult 4wding.
Suggest a set of Maxtrax or similar may come in handy.
    Directions
    From Brisbane:
It leaves from Moreton Island Adventures at the Port of Brisbane.
    Detailed directions are here
    https://www.moretonislandadventures..../getting-there
    Costs:
Ferry - MICAT Ferry - $100 as per above.
Vehicle Access permit required to drive on the Island. 1 month Permit is $45.10
Camping permit – 2 people for 2 nights is $23
Full list of other options are here http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/experien...ping_fees.html
So an indicative total would be about $168.10 for the 2 for the 3 days.
Weather: Hopefully a fine Winters Weekend. It will be cold at night, so take some warm clothes.
    Island Map: http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/mo...p-rec-area.pdf
Details: The plan is to meet at the MICAT office on Saturday morning say 7.30-7.45am, to catch the 8.30am ferry. Don’t be late. Spending the day exploring, then making our way to camp, set up and have a few beers over dinner in front of the fire with good company. (fires are allowed in the designated camp sites but you must bring your wood) Sunday we will spend the day on the tracks, fishing relaxing. Infact there is plenty to do, like explore some of the old ruins, sand boarding down the dunes, 4wding, cape Moreton lighthouse etc, then on Monday leaving on the 3.30pm ferry from the wrecks. We will be back in Brisbane Port around 5pm.
BYO Tents/Swags, cooking gear, food and water, fishing gear for the three days. Please plan to be self sufficient.
There are toilets at The wrecks, Ben-EVA, Northpoint, Cape Moreton , Eagers beach etc.
Cold showers at the major campsites as well.

Of course, the usual trip disclaimer applies:
PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER BELOW; IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO AGREE TO THE TERMS SET OUT THEREIN THEN PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND. THIS INCLUDES PRADOPOINT MEMBERS & THEIR FAMILIES & FRIENDS!

I've been dying to check out Moreton. I've just had 4 weeks off for the cape though so I think the boss might get cranky if I ask for an extra day off. I'll work on him. When do you need definite answers for the ferry booking?

Right very interested. How would we go towing the camper trailer over there. We are coming back from Hervey bay on the Friday which is our shakedown run for the camper so might stay in Brissy friday night and catch the ferry

Once you're on the island you'll be fine with the camper trailer (especially if you have mates in case you get bogged). Middle Road can get a little soft in a couple of places if it hasn't rained recently, but you should make it through just fine. It may have a bearing on where you camp as not all sites are large enough for a camper trailer- there are plenty that are big enough though. Also to get over on the ferry, you will be charged for an extra vehicle with the trailer - I'm not sure if this will be at full price, or if you can get that at the discounted rate too. I just paid $400 to get the Prado and camper over...

          Guys,
          Trip on hold sorry.
I spoke to MICAT this morning first thing, and they told me late Friday two groups booked all the remaining space on the Ferry on Monday 28th return date, due to the $100 special deal. Consequently there is no availability to get back now with the $100 unless you return on Thursday the 31st return date.
I am wait-listed with them as the first contact point if others pull out of Monday return date, we will get them but i don't hold much hope that a whole group will pull out.

          Cheers

Well I managed to booked Friday lunchtime after talking to Robert about this trip and there was 19 slots available after me, so looks like a couple of pretty large groups have got in ahead of Robert. Hopefully there will be a couple of cancellations before we leave. I'll make a decision Thursday afternoon as to whether I still go and do a solo run. Meanwhile I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed that a couple of slots on the return leg come available...

Unfortunately we had to cancel this trip as there were no slots on the return ferry. Two large groups took all the remaining spaces on the ferry before we could book. We will endevour to do this trip later in the year.

But on the bright side, not to waste the leave day we are off to Fraser Island this weekend instead!
