Thought I'd post about a few tracks I went out on last Sunday around marysville.

There were 4 of us that tackled these tracks all in different vehicles, stock p38 range rover, a lifted ford ranger with 33" muddies, a lifted pathfinder with 33" muddies and then there was me in a stock 120..

I was invited along for this trip and I had no idea what I was getting myself into, the first hill should have been the warning.

We started off form the information centre in marysville and made are up to the start of Mary meadows track accessed by Kepple court it's a sharp left onto Aubrey Cuzens drive you are then into a short but 3/4 wheel height water crossing into the first climb the track continues on for a few k's through some small climbs until you come to a deeply rutted area be careful with the line here.

Once through you pick up Mary meadows track which is heavily rutted with narrow ridges in the wet very easy to drop a wheel in the rut if not careful the track was full of mud, the first obstacle you will come across here is a 60m long bog rutted bod hole we had 2 cars stuck here me and the p38 recovery was easy enough though.

Approx 100m and around the corner is your next challenge that cause panel damage to the pathfinder ,ranger and p38 once again deeply rutted hard to pick the right line would strongly recommend minimum rear locker to make your life easy, took me a while to navigate as I went really slow.

After this track you wind on to triangle rd there were some good little climbs here and much of the same as previous tracks continue on to Ackerman track very steep hill climbs here in both directions made harder by the wet, be careful of in a group as you have no visual of the car in front so make sure you have a radio handy.

The track starts to get easier once you get to the top of the hill on Ackerman track and coming down the ground turns to rock instead of slick mud be careful coming down there are some huge holes in the middle and I had to get my wife to spot for me wheel placement is critical very easy for something to go wrong quickly in this last section

The track is extremely tight and narrow in places so don't attempt if your precious about scratches your paint work will get chewed up

You make your way to gypsy lane be careful at the exit into MAROONDAH highway as you go through a deep puddle/hole which you will drag your arse on.

The pardon did this track the easiest out of the 4 cars as we are stock we really would have had more fun and benefited by having a minimum 2inch lift I dropped my tyre pressure down to 20psi as the ground was slick and traction was essential

If I had known what this track had install I would have stayed in bed as it's not the off-loading I enjoy, there was no damage done to the car except for destroying the factory bash plate.. ... And without bigger tyres you will drag and get hung up on your diff like me!!!

And I'm happy to admit I was crapping myself for a good 70% all up it took us 51/2 hours to complete, the track doesn't get used much in winter except for the big tonka trucks

Thanks for reading hope this helps someone in future
    Cheers

Sounds like fun Toy4x4 Isn't any trip you complete without damage a fun trip?

I haven't done any 4wd'ing up that way in a number of years, although I have been to Marysville annually since Black Saturday trying to support the area - the first year, I let my kids buy something from every shop (there were only about 7 that survived the fires), now the area has been significantly rebuilt so I have to limit the spending to just a few stores! I encourage anyone who hasn't been there for a while to go for a drive - it's only a short drive out of Melbourne.

Sounds like the Prado 120 handled it better than the other vehicles (of course). When I last went 4wd'ing there, one of the guys had an old Rangie that could not get up one of the hills. I drove up in my 120 without hassle, then had to reverse half-way down the hill and do a standing hill-start snatch - needless to say, the other guy sold his Rangie the next week out of sheer embarassment.

Thanks for the tips - will have to try some of those tracks once the weather improves a little. I didn't realise there were good tracks still open - most are closed until 31/10.

Shhh don't tell everybody about Gypsy Lane

Give Fischer Creek (out the back of the Black Spur Pub) then onto Strickland Spur a go, they'll test a 120

Hope the above image has uploaded I have a few more of the day. The last time I was in marysville was 7 years ago I forgot how nice it is through there, if you look there is still plenty of evidence of the fires and being out on some of the tracks literally smack bang behind the town gave me a new appreciation of just how hard it would gave been to fight a fire throughout the terrain!!

I was nervous about buying the prado and researched and analysed various makes and models before parting with the hard earned but after last week I'm stoked my new tyres haven't cone in yet and even with the crappy grantreks it just did easy.

I've booked in next week at ARB to get full underbody protection, slowly building it up to do more of the same and harder

Thanks for the pic. If that is Ackerman or Triangle track, looks like they have been chewed out by morons in 'comp' trucks. Such a pity as they were great beginners/intermediate tracks.

Unfortunately Ackerman and triangle tracks are both like this, there are parts which are fine I came across a bloke on a trail bike when we were stopped and he couldn't believe we had made it as far as we had considering the only guys that use the tracks now are the guys in the big tonka trucks and big tyres.

We tried our hardest to leave the tracks with minimal damage which we did except for the places where we scrapped diffs on the ground, being fairly new into off-road adventures my impression Is the majority of places/tracks I can go within a close proximity to Melbourne are in a bad state, not so bad in summer when traction is easier to come by.
