Rainbow Valley Day Trip - 21 Mar 08

Well I already know that it is just me going with no likelihood of anyone else turning up but hey I have to kick off the central NT chapter now don't I?

So we are going to do a day trip down to Rainbow Valley tomorrow, we will leave around 8:30 am from Alice. Should put us there just before lunch, have a look around and have a bite to eat before heading back to town.

Might call in to Jims Place for a drink before heading back to Alice.

Will hopefully post some photos tomorrow night.

Anyway we had a nice day down at Rainbow Valley. It would be much better to do it during the winter months and camp overnight there at the camp grounds. The only problem we encountered today was the huge numbers of flies that decended upon us the minute we opened the doors of the Prado. :x

We spent some time walking through the valley up to Mushroom Rock and then our sanity gave out and we hurridly walked back to the Prado and went to Jims Place for a bit of lunch and a relax.

It would be much better to be at Rainbow Valley at sunset to get a much better colouration in the rocks, even better if it has been raining for a while so that you get the reflection in the lake that forms in front of the cliffs.

For those that are interested the camp grounds are very well appointed for the outback. They have gas BBQs as well as wood burners, there is a pit toilet but the only problem I saw was that it would be hard to set up a camper trailer as the idiots have lined the road with pine stumps so there is no way you could back a trailer off the road to set it up. There are inidvidual parking bays but they are not designed to cater for a camper trailer.

There is an honour box there for park fees of $7.70 per day for a family or there are lesser fees for individuals and couples.

Okay so Hunter looks nothing like me, I know and I have checked out the posties but he does not look like any of them either! :lol: He actually is the spitting image of our daughter when she was that age except he has blue eyes and blonde/ginger hair.

I must say we really enjoyed our lunch at Jims place and if you ever come up this way with a camper in tow then I would highly recommend the camp ground there and they have a pool and spa for those using the camp ground. They also have a huge BBQ area and also inside cafe style eatery. Good value, food wise, better than the prices in Alice that is for sure. It would be a good place to setup digs for a day or two and do the 4by tracks around the area.

It is an easy day trip or even a half day trip Kevin from Alice. If planning to do it you would be best to arrange so as to be there in the late afternoon to really get the colourisation in the rocks.

the above is the walk into Mushroom Rock



The walking track is pretty easy but there are some sections of deep loose sand that would make it impossible for someone with a disability to manage. However in that circumstance then they could get there via the salt pan as it is as hard as rock.
