  • 08 Easter Pics

I thought it would be good to get a collection of photos from all the PP'ers easter camping or other trips away for the weekend.

A group of 4 of us went about 20kms west of Chillagoe and camped in the Walsh river. Chillagoe is around a 3-4hr drive west from Cairns.

Walsh River Camping (Where I managed to get bogged! ops: )

    Balancing Rock

    Random landscape shot

We came across a reminder of how careful you need to be when driving especially at holiday time. There was a GU Patrol that was invloved in a single car accident and had rolled down the Highway at around 100km/h. There were big chunks of road missing where they had gone over, the front was snapped off forward of the firewall, the front axle ripped out and crap strewn all down the highway. We got there just as they were loading the last of 3 occupants into a helicopter. Unfortunately we haven't heard yet if everyone survived, but when talking to a shaken up firey she hesitated to say that they were all going to be ok. So fingers crossed.

Just a word of warning, take it easy out there and pull over if you're tired!

Anyway post up your easter pics!

(Mods feel free to move this to LFaR's easter thread if required)

    Cheers,

    Crammy

The temp was not too bad it was only about 34 with a nice breeze blowing but the flies were absolutely attrocious. Hopefully we will get a cold snap next month and kill the flies off. It is wishfull thinking though as we probably will not see fly killing temps till mid May.

Yes mate it is on the road to Normanton. The camp spot was virtually off the side of the road, you can see the road crossing the river behind us in the first pic, it's about 20mins NW of chillagoe. It's a great spot to chill out, swim, fish and have a play in the sand.

We decided to do a Barrington trip even though it rained every day and probably got onto most of the available tracks in the area at some stage. For you guys that did the recent Prado trip to Barrington, this is what your rigs should have looked like, instead of being squeeky clean

We managed to get down to Watergauge on the Friday, what a trip and when we got there it was wall to wall campers and no room for extras. On the way out though the Prado just didn't have enough traction from the Grandtreks and pulling the camper trailer was a challenge to say the least and at one stage was sliding back down the hill out of control. Had to winch her out to get to some stable ground. There was even one bloke in there with a two wheel drive truck so don't know how he was going to get out.

On Sunday we decided that another trip to watergauge was warranted and the track was like grease 8) . Got in there without too many worries and all but one group had already left with evidence of vehicles side swiping trees (bark missing). This time, even without the CT was still hard going and had to winch out again.

From four different alternatives, I tried three before getting over the first hump, Shane took the newly made track on the grass and then both vehicles were motionless together but the Prado got around 50 metres further up the hill on the Grandtreks whereas the Cooper ATR's couldn't get him mobile (had 1/2 tonne of firewood in the back as ballast also).

                  Winching Shane's Courier

                  Winching the Prado

and to prove we got there - The Watergauge

On the way out the Prado decided to take own destiny and slide sideways down a fairly steep decline frightening the other occupants but on the up side getting into sticky situations has its benefits: permission has been granted to lift the Prado and put more agressive tyres on her

My wife was the one that said to me that we should have a lift kit installed when she saw the other Prados on the Barrington trip. In fact she kept prattling on about oh we should get one of those or one of these etc. By the end of the day she had clocked up a good amount of money.

We went and had a look at a camper trailer today but alas it was a little on the sad side for us. The one thing it did re-enforce to me is that my wife wants a hard floor camper and after watching the guy struggle to put up this soft floor camper I have to agree with her.

The Barrington Tops sure are a great 4by destination. The leaches can be a bit much at times but it is a beautiful destination.

Looks like you had a lot of fun on the tracks.

Yeah tell me about it, I told her at the Barringtons not to talk like that in Pradopoint public as all the guys would want her.

After watching that camper trailer weigh down the back of the sellers 120 series Prado today I am thinking that I am going to need some Polyairs in mine to help stabilise it.

Though it was a heavy camper trailer with a really heavy storage box mounted to the draw bar.

Because my CT was lifted 50mm as standard, it is a real pain trying to get it off the tow bar and the first comment about lifting the vehicle came after I caught my fingers getting it off, the second comment came when the Prado was being used as a grader on some of the jump ups. Once justification is demonstrated you have to go straight out and do it.

What did have me concerned once we got out of Watergauge with the CT on the back was the load on the winch, vehicle around +2.5T camper trailer 1.5T = 4000kgs winch at 9000lb and a fairly steep incline doesn't leave any room for error in pulling power. What I did find with the Premier though was that in pulling the cable out needed my lady operating the remote control to feed the cable as it was too tight to pull, whereas Shane has a wireless remote on his Ironman winch, which made it a one person job. :?
