  • NSW and Victoria High Country 4/5/6 April 2008

Thought I'd check out the NSW and Victoria high country just before the snow settles in and tracks are closed for the winter period. To throw a spanner in the works I wanted to do some fishing over at Lake Eucumbene: my favourite freshwater fishing hole.

    Day 1
Tired from packing the car till 12:30AM and not being able to sleep during the night due to excitement we headed off to Lake Eucumbene just after work.

Here is a pic of the Prado ready for the journey (with the brother in law being a tool):

We set off from south of Canberra and drove through Namadgi National Park and headed off to Wallace Island (via Seven Gates Rd) located within the center of Eucumbene. Soon as we hit our usual spot we then setup camp and threw the lines into the water. Suprisingly the fish were biting just before Dawn.

After a feed and a few drinks we then headed off into the swags for a bit of shut eye.

    Day 2
Here are some shots of Eucumbene the following morning take from my swag:

...and the fish we caught the night before:

After we filled our bellies with steak, bacon and egg sandwiches (obviously we needed the calories for a day long 4wd-ing trip ) we then proceeded to 3 Mile Dam via Kiandra to check out some camping sites:

Obviously an extremely nice area to bring the wife and kids for a camping trip. I'm also thinking of organising a 4wd winter snow trip over here as well: I always wanted to see what it was like to wake up with snow coverage around you.

On the way to Cabramurra via Selwyn we spotted a dam that might be Talbingo or Blowering Dam:

We then proceeded to the Geehi campsite via Cabramurra and Khancoban and stopped off over at Tooma reservoir:

...and the Murray 2 power station:

...and some lookout just before the Geehi Flat that had awesome views:

Geehi was awesome: pristine country with campsites situated along the Murray - there was nothing better than the sound of a stream in the background at a campsite.

On the way to our campsite we crossed the Murray twice: this was the deepest the Prado had ever bathed into water:

I'm hoping that these pics can convince the missus for us get a snorkel installed on the rig!

After a whole heap of driving we were relieved to set camp, have some dinner and drinks and head back into the swags to get ready for the next day. I must admit that I was a little bit disappointed that most of the tracks on this leg of the journey were on sealed road, little did I know what was in store for Day 3.

    Day 3

We started the day with another round of bacon and steak sandwiches (obviously this was a boys trip) and headed off to Tom Groggin and hour down the road from Geehi. Once we explored the campsites around the area we then proceeded onto the Mt Pinnibar track and commenced our journey to the Pinnibar peak.

I must admit, this was some of the roughest terrain that the Prado had seen; an absolute adrenalin rush navigating through ruts and steep slopes. At some points I thought the HT's wouldn't step up to the plate but they did. It was good to have my mate Mark (an experienced 4WD-er) handy with advice on how to tackle some portions of the track.

Once we reached the peak we were greeted with awesome views:

Heres the Prado with the Victorian high country in the background:

...and another with me and my rig:

The rest of the journey we proceeded down Mt Pinnibar and back home via Thredbo, Jindabyne and Cooma.

We're so lucky to have such a beautiful backyard to explore and what better to explore it with but a Prado!

      Thanks for that Fungi2003 :!:

We had been planning to do a trip over there in a couple of weeks but had to pull out for various reasons

I heard over the weekend that the Vic Alps have already had a dusting of snow!

      Great photos.

Well done Fungi. Great write up and pics.

Isn't it amazing, the places these cars will go .. even in standard trim.
It just makes our bush touring and exploring options even better.

I kept an eye out for the snow cams (www.ski.com.au) and found that the moutains received a fair bit of snow Wednesday (2/04/08) night, at the same time the region had gale force winds. During the trip we saw pockets of snow as well.

Along the Alpine Way towards Thredbo there was a fair amount of trees that had fallen onto the road that was still in the process of being cleared. There was also heavy SES presence as well; obviously they were doing a fair bit of work in the area.

I can second that Chippy, although, she could do with a bit of a lift. On the way up we had a couple of scrapes but down, due the weight being transfered to the front of the car, we didn't have the same clearance and hit a few rocks/sticks.

I had a look underneath her last night and she didn't bare many noticeable battle wounds, although, the sand from my Fraser trip sandblasted some of the bash plates.

I must admit though, the D-4D is a gutsy engine; there was one point where I was in 2nd low with the engine screaming at 3500RPM going up steep, damp, loose terrain.

                Great trip Fungi,

I like your water crossings better at least they are clean water

I think in the future there may have to be a national PP meet in every state so we interstaters can enjoy your country side as well 8)

There wasnt any pics of you climbing the ruts :?:
                Cheers Moto

What great scenery and a great trip by the looks of it

Was there 2 cars?? or did you just HAVE to do the water crossing 3 times to get the pics That water must be cold so I can't imagine anyone would wade through first
                  Cheers, Leon
There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!

The streams and lakes throughout the high country are absolutely clean, I felt it was sacrilege driving through them.

I'm definitely up for a national PP meet within the NSW/ACT region, more than happy to help out with organising it!

Within regards to climbing the ruts, we didn't get a chance to climb out of the car and take some pics - I suppose I was concentrating on getting through it all safely. I'm also spewing that I didn't take any pictures of the 70-100m water crossing across the Murray over at the Tom Groggin camp ground.

That river crossing is actually renowned for warping brake rotors/discs. We waited at least 10 minutes before crossing the river.

Only one car, although, I would recommend having another car just in case something went pear shaped.

Correct, we did drive through that river crossing three times to get that pic!

The water is extremely cold, we didn't wade through as it was obvious that the depth was consistent across the river. Depth was easy to judge as it was so clean.

                        Far out Fungi

                        Hey bro that looks awesome!

You as a blogger? Who have thunk it hey? :P

Great pics - and maybe the next time I'm on that side of the planet we can do some serious 4WD business stuff and get super dirty and muddy - and the misus giving you the snorkel go ahead? - only if she experiences the car almost drowing

                        Great pics!!!

Great pics.... makes me itch to get out there for the next trip...

Just goes to show how far a standard vehicle can go, more people should just get out there and enjoy oz rather than toss off over all the bling they bolt to their truck to impress other tossers.....

                          GO ON, GET OUT THERE!!

                            Top photos and report fungi.

In October, do you think you could do the route from khancoban to tom groggin and down into Thredbo? Or still too much snow or runoff in the rivers? Are the roads even open at that time of year???

Driving from the MotoGP to Sydney early OCT and looking for options other than the highways.

                            Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the tracks around the Victoria and NSW high country are closed between June (Queens B'Day long weekend) and October. Even if it were to be open be prepared to drive through some snow.

Either way it beats having to drive on the highway; you won't regret driving through that area one bit.
