  • Mayford + Blue Rag

Some guys at work, myself included, are planning a trip into Mayford on the 18th April.
The last time the guys went in, the rivers rose 13 inches overnight, making for a most interesting time. (I couldn't make it, as I was otherwise engaged)

So our plan is to roughly follow (ish) the route from the Hema High Country Atlas, As shown in the attached.
There is talk about heading into the Buckland Valley after work on friday, then progressing up to Blue Rag then into Mayford on the Saturday. Finishing with an easy run out on the Sunday.

    The invite sent out:

Mayford is a lovely spot, would like to see it dry this time…
I figure we meet up at Myrtleford no later than 8.30am then head over to Porepunkah and into the Buckland Valley where we can make our way up over Mt Selwyn to the Dargo High Plains Rd via Twin Jeep Track. We’ll follow this south for a little while before (time-dependant) detouring up to do the run up to the Blue Rag trig point. After that, return to the High Plains Rd and continue south to Kings Spur Track and head down to the Mayford town site to camp. Similar to Talbotville or Wonnangatta, just smaller and less visited. Kings Spur Track is likely to close at the start of May. Sunday morning probably track back the way we came in. Should only be an hour or so blacktop each way for the whole trip.

This should be a pretty straightforward trip, as always whatever recovery gear you have, bring it in. UHF radios are a very useful addition. There should be plenty of wood around so we can get a decent fire going-if you have a saw or axe, many hands etc… We’ll be in for some fairly mild weather during the day, at night it should be cool. Chuck a fishing rod in, we’ll be pretty close to the Upper Dargo River. Keep in mind too that if we get any decent rain just before or during the trip, we will have to have a rethink, I don’t think anyone really enjoyed the river crossings coming out in December last year…

The rain has started...plans may have to change.

Blue Rag will be on regardless (we hope) as there is no reason for rain to stop that part of trip.
The Buckland Valley is on the cutting block depending on the conditions (unfortunately)
Mayford on the other hand...if the rain continues (expecting up to 20 mm on Saturday)...we may have to swap the rivers into Mayford for a cruise into Dargo or into Talbotville.

Everyone is entitled to whichever car they'd like.

That convoy had 2 navaras, a jeep, a hummer, a patrol, a pajero, a pathfinder...an eclectic group if nothing else.

Im not sure fun was the word they used to describe it...

This weekend (at the moment) has A 100 series cruiser, a pathfinder, an FJ, at least 1 navara, possibly a jeep and the Prado.

Funny you should post this I was in there that weekend. We drove out about 30 mins later, both groups had sat around Sunday morning as the river dropped. At the time this was filmed I would say the waters had dropped 30cm or more, and maybe another 10 cm by the time we drove out. There are 3 crossings, and in all off them, we all floated a bit. My group had, my 120, a GU, a ranger and a D40. All with 2" lift, mud tyres and snorkels.

We were all lucky to get out unscathed in my opinion. Next time id stay another day. You don't get many second chances in rivers like that

                    Wow,

One after the other? Not a thought??? Just go for it? Risk takers.......
Well then there is luck. Also more proof you don't need a snorkel x3 floating away without water in the engine.

                    Done!

Well today is the day. We've had non stop rain all night, and it's still raining now.

I have a sneaking suspicion we won't be camping at Mayford. A delicious pub dinner at Dargo may be on the cards...
Photos and etc will be posted next week. I'll let you know how/where we go.

Bad news. An executive decision was made to postpone our trip till the first weekend of May. We've had about 20-30 mm of rain over night and the forecast just doesn't get better. The guys thought that it's just not fun camping when you know the rain just won't stop. I'm disappointed but will get a chance to work on a few packing issues I have before next time.

Although we didn't head to Mayford, I did manage to get the wheels dirty in the Reef Hills State Park on Sunday:

                            Good decision.
Camping & rain dont work well together.

Reminds me of a past life, well before Prado. Reef Hills was almost twice the size as the freeway hadn't been built and I was into rallying, mid 1980s. Reef Hills was ffffast! 150kph plus on the main roads at night in drizzling rain....
35kph in low range can seem fast these days.
