    Palm Valley Finke National Park

    Mothers Day 11th May 2005.

I suggested this year to take a picnic for mothers day, Wife - "Where do have in mind". Husband - "How about Palm Valley?", Wife - "Sounds nice (thinking of white sand and blue water, blowing a light breeze with beautiful green palms, maybe olive skinned bared chested studs bathing in the sun), can we swim there?" Husband -"Maybe!!!" Wife - "How long will it take?" Husband - " Ahh about 2 Hours" Wife - "What!!! OK"

With this image in her head we took of around lunch time and we charged down Larapinta Drive for our picnic. 1 1/2 hours later we arrived at the turn off, time to air down and try out the new springs on the corrigations. The Prado travelled really well and after telling the wife several times I was told "shut up about your springs, you've told me enough times !!"

As we got closer we passed through a electric fenced cattle grid, then into Finke National Park. We picked a good time to visit as we passed alot of interstate registed vehicles heading out. The closer we got to the valley the track started to get narrower and more challenging and with the picnic insight it was time to pull up and make lunch.

Straight after we feasted on turkey, cheese and tomato toasties and some fruit we had a visit from a local fauna, a dingo. I could'nt beleive my eyes. This is the first one ive seen ever. We travelled all the way to Fraser Island for 2 weeks expecting to see at least one but to our disapointment we didn't, ill tick that one off on my fauna spotting book.

Time to hit the track for the carpark another 4 klms away but before we went I was told to sort out the garbage out. Husband - "We have to take the rubbish home" Wife - "Yeh right!" So I took a trip to the dunnies and found this sign (sometimes its easier to take a photo of the truth rather than argue about it).

After all that we were back on the track, the trail didnt disappoint either. It leads you down into the valley were you end up crossing the river several times over large areas of rock formations and at times you wonder where the track goes. About half way down we passed a Britz or Apollo Hilux camper parked at the side of the trail. As we found out on the way out they were having clearence issues, so I fully understand why they left it.

At the carpark your required to walk another 1 hour, although with a pregnant wife and a 1 year old in tow this wasnt going to happen so we strolled down the valley for a few hundred meters to my wifes dissapointment mind you. But at the end of the day the weather was brillant, we missed the day time rush with tourist buses and we nearly had the place to ourselfs. We plan to stay overnight sometime when our camper trailer arrives but in the mean time we can visit anytime really as long as we call Alice Springs home. Sean.

Looks like a nice way to spend the day... definitely away from the crowds.

We went to 3 different picnic spots before we found one where we could share a BBQ
        Cheers, Leon

Hey zook, is your bus lifted?
Heading up there in a couple of weeks and wondering how we will go with standard suspension.

Re: Palm Valley NT Mothers Day 08

Hi Lofty, you wont need to lift your Prado to get in to Palm Valley. The track in is rocky past the camping ground but most standard vehicles will make it. There is one section where a little track building is required if you need to and this spot is roughly half way to the Valley. You will often find vehicles parked near here because they think they wont make it. Its a nice drive in if you like your tracks slighty challenging, I prefer to call it fun though,
                  Zook.

P.S. yep she lifted alright, OME HD allround with Airbags in the rear and bigger MT tyres.

Lofty as Zook has said the track only becomes a bit challenging after the campgrounds. It does get a bit lost the closer you get to the carpark at the end before you hoof it, I think the worst bit is if you are there around noon the sun is right over head in summer and there is no contrast between highs and lows so it is easy to take a wrong line and bottom out under those conditions.

Lofty, Here's a couple of draft responses I've prepared for you in case you need some extra help to justify a suspension lift to the missus. Just cut & paste the one that works best for you:

Palm Valley and a few other trips around the Red Centre can be quite sandy and rough. A suspension lift is a MUST if you want to see these fantastic sights without worrying about bottoming out, getting caught or causing damage to your vehicle's underbody. Plus the extra height and improved also greatly adds to your comfort and safety when traveling over long stretches of corrugated roads, especially if also towing.

                        OR

Sure, you don't need a suspension lift to get to Palm Valley and other prime sights around the Red Centre. You might managed to get through unscaved to these spots if you are lucky (and not towing a load too), but at least you'll have an exciting run. However, you need to be prepared for the Prado to earn a few 'sorry scratches' to marks its travels, plus gain a few dents underneath... but hey, that's what 4wd'ing's all about, isn't it? The money you saved but not getting a lift can go towards any 4wd recovery you might need or panel/underbody damage repairs and chiropractic appointments to re-align your spine from all the corrugations.

                        Cheers...

Actually The Chief has been campaigning for lift, lockers and snorkel for some time. If she had her way i would be paying off ARB for years to come

After reading all the suspension threads over the last few days i booked the car in to have Polyairs installed in the rear, and am leaving the lift alone for now. Where we have struggled in the past is with all the gear in the back she really drags her bum, (the car not the wife  ) so looking forward to better handling and towing capabilities, plus a little bit of lift.
