  • Camping around Darwin

Looking for some ideas for great places to go camping within about a days drive of Darwin. Have some time off over the school holidays and want to take the family camping in the camper trailer, preferably somewhere secluded (not a caravan park) for a few days.

The Prado is pretty capable and we have a patriot camper so not really worried about getting out of the way some where if anyone out there has any good ideas I would be more than happy to hear them.

Hey mate try Gregory NP, the first Link is the 4wd track and the second the NT parks and wildlife page:

We used to spend a lot of time at gunn point. Good camping and relatively secluded sites all along the beach front. Stay away at Easter and other long weekends if you want a bit of peace and quiet as all the loonies will be on bikes and quads up and down the beach all day, but weekdays likely to be very few others there. Tide goes out a long way but just put some crab pots out the front of camp on low tide and pick them up on next low tide. Never went without a feed of muddies for very little effort.
Reasonable fishing off the beach or short trip to leaders creek boat ramp, a bit further to saltwater arm. Lots of 4 x 4 tracks around to explore as well.
1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

Nice, there is some good camping/fishing along the Roper River too (on your way to Lorella), just watch the snapping handbags. Also check out Butterfly Springs - heaps of butterflies, monitors/goannas and also the lost city in Limmen NP whilst en-route.
