  • Alice Springs PP Mystery Run 20th July 08

One reason I love living in Alice Springs is that if you want to spend a week or a weekend in the outback, you can without passing another vehicle for hours or even days. You can also fit in a qiuck day trip with your mates and families and still be within 20klms radius from town. You still have phone reception and if you feel a bit lost, just climb a hill to see where town is. This is my second trip that I've organised through PP and had different company each time. This trip Fergs and family rolled up at the Fynns Grave meeting point at 1pm or should I say 1:30pm. I haven't driven off the bituman north of here but we knew there were tracks worth checking out, hence the "Mystery Run". Once we met up and aired down we simply crossed Larapinta Dr and straight in to the dirt. The track was rather easy until we reached a cutaway that wasn't as such a challenge but more or less gave the Prados a chance to streach their legs.

Once we conquered the cutaway we stopped in awe at the next challenge ahead, an almighty hill climb.

I didnt think much about it, I had to give it a go. I gave the camera to Fergs and jumped in the driver's seat. I'd have to say my first attempt only saw our vehicle reach the half way point and receded back to the bottom. With a change of line and a bit more right foot, the mighty 95 conquered "the hill". Ferg's wife Michelle was a little overcome by it all and decided she wanted no part of it and ordered Fergs to take the chicken track. Although we both knew he would have driven it, times like this you're better off listening to the boss.

The veiw as usual was great, the kids had a run around and Fergs kept telling me, "After the suspension upgrade im doin' that hill, without the misses".

We got on our way and followed the track a little longer taking us in all sorts of directions until we met up to the track we took in our previous journey. We knew this was a slightly challenging track and since Fergs hadn't actually driven it, we gave it a go. Once we reached the rest stop we all noticed the fire in the background. Fergs was due to start work later that evening and said "It may be a long night" (as he is one of our town fire fighters).

This track has a great little lookout that 4WD Action used in the 200 series compairo with the Patrol. It's a great trek, some nice rock hopping, hill climbs, descents and a little sand driving thrown in for fun. If you get a chance some time soon I will be running a night trip on this track in reverse, should be a good chance to test out our RooLites.

    Zook.

Excellent write up and pics Zook. My folks took me to some great tracks out Undoolya rd about 1km off the bitumen a while back. There was an awesome hill climb to a camping/bbq spot on the top of a small hill looking back west across town. I'll never forget the awesome views across alice.

In reverse direction Yorkes, although your idea would certainly be a challenge (theres always one clown out there LOL   ). Booya, sorry to hear you missed yet another drive. Dont worry ill be doing more soon. I may be doing a trip Undoolya way next and show you the lookout Crammy explained. Hope there is some interest in this night drive although some suspension lift and spotties would help heaps. Cheers to all who encourage these trips,

                Zook.

Hey guys just be aware that some of the stations around Alice do not take kindly to anyone trespassing on there lands. Just make sure when you go out exploring not to venture where you are not allowed to go, some have been known to shoot first and ask questions later - literally.

Just check the classies in the Advocate as they quite frequently place their trespassing ads in there.

I agree Mav, yes you do have to be careful where you venture. The area we have covered in our last 2 trip reports is crown land and as long as your vehicle is registed there is no issue. If you go East from Alice Undoolya Station ownes much of the land, and the area is well sign posted. The area before Undoolya is also Crown land (off Stephens Rd) and the same rules apply. This is the area I would like to explore again in a PP run. The Advocate regularly run notices of tresspassing from Mount Doreen Station including Vaughan Spring (great waterhole I hear), Undoolya and The Gardens Stations. The main problem that ive been told is the indigious peoples of that area have been taking short cuts to town and the slaughtering of cattle. I beleive their lossing up to 5-6 a week. They have been taking the rear legs and leaving the rest to rot. Shooters and trail bike riders have also been blamed for the destruction of pastrol lands and the goverment have cracked down on Station owners who dont look after the land. So as usual the minority ruin it for the majority. Sounds like the same old story all over Australia. There are still plenty places to explore though, as long as you dont drop a fence all should be fine.
