  • Fraser Is. Report & Blown Turbo

    Hi Guys,

Well the trip didn' go as planned. We enjoyed a full day in Grafton before heading to Fraser. In short, we setup camp just before it started raining, and then we enjoyed two days & nights of constant rain. So atm we are on the Gold Coast for a few nights. The prado is @ the local Toyota dealer while they look at the blown turbo

More details to follow, Ang is doing the full trip report & I'll post up some pictures.
    Cheers,
    Joel

      The contenders

Blown turbo, hopefully just a blown seal, but if it needs replacing should I bolt on a worked turbo for some extra power?

Sorry for the doom & gloom Damo.

Toyota have said it would most probably need a new turbo. Apparently the last one they did cost approx $7,000. Yes, for a new turbo, wastegate using geniune parts +labour.( I told the bird, that the geniune parts is why it was so dear & excessive to say the least.)

Looking to rebuild it if possible. Remove the turbo with my FIL & ship to Sydney for 3 days, about $2,200 worst case scenario + freight. I still have some research to do. If anyone can give advice, feel free.

              Thx

it's going to be a memorable fraser trip, and an expensive one at that.
hope there is some good that comes out of it.

I'm just happy I didn't have to get a tow off Fraser. Its still going so the Toyota won't die easily. Unfortunately we only saw Eli Ck and with the weather it was just plain miserable.

                  Here's a pic of camp.

Mate the Oztent performed great. only 1 or 2 tiny leaks with over 48hrs constant rain. The Rooftop tents on the other hand did have some condensation build up under the mattress and therefore wet bedding. We had some condensation on the inside of the roof but nothing you wouldnt normally get. Didnt see the sun once while on fraser so no reason to smile We will return, ...one day

Try some Jap import wreckers for a low K turbo. It's a common size on Toyotas (diesel and petrol) I'm thinking $500-600 ball park.

tough luck with the turbo Joel, its never fun having truck problems while far from home.
As for the wet weather, I dont mind camping in a bit of rain, so I think your just being soft. Although Im sure it was just the icing on the cake after the turbo problem. At least its a Toyota, takes more than a blown turbo to stop it.

You are right with the turbo Glenn, we made it home safe. The truck was sending smoke signals around town better then any indian, but above 2000rpm it was clean.

As for the soft comment....you'll keep!

In case things weren't bad enough, my brothers new 2week old Patrol was broken into last night while parked out side apartments in the gold coast, new handhelds & a few other things taken.
