  • Outback SA Part 2

I thought I’d make separate posts for each part of our trip report for the benefit of those with lower download speeds.
I hope the moderators are happy with this, if not, I’m happy to merge them into one.

    Anyway, too carry on….

Our next overnight stop was Oodnadatta, which is an historic Ghan railway town. All basic facilities are available. I guess the most famous attraction is the Pink Roadhouse, but the town also has a museum, a few historic buildings, historic rail and Afghan graves, and of course the Pub!!
Lynnie and Adam Plate own the Pink roadhouse and are a great source of information about anything in the area.
We stayed at the caravan park (behind the roadhouse) and had lunch in the diner.(Try the Oodnaburger… yum..)

    Diesel was $2.11 lt
Site at the park was $17.50 (powered)

The next day saw us start south down the track, with a quick stop for those must have track sign photos!!

This is looking north into town, the Pink roadhouse is on the left as you enter.

Not too far out of town we came across this… a good reminder to slow down and concentrate on the road!!

    Roll over –GPS- S27°45.17’, E135°37.10’

The track is generally in good condition as you can see in this picture. There are some rough stretches but in general it’s a good dirt road.

First stop for the day, Mt Dutton ruins. If you like history you’ll love the Oodnadatta track!!
Mt Dutton siding ruins –GPS- S27°48.82’, E135°43.04’

I don’t know the story behind the grave, it’s sure a lonely place to die.

You see plenty of these everywhere you stop too…listen to the locals people, lower pressures and slow down, it’s not a race. Also stay on the tracks around the ruins and railway line… there’s plenty of old spikes and bit’s of sharp steel lying around!!

The famous Algebuckina bridge which spans the river Neales. Completed in 1892 by a work force of some 852 men. At 587 meters long it is the longest single span bridge in South Australia.

It really is quite an astonishing piece of engineering in its own right.

There are plenty of great camping spots in the area and by the water hole on the east side of the road.

South end of bridge (hill over looking bridge in 1st pic) –GPS- S27°54.20’, E135°48.44’

A quick stop at North Peake siding ruins for lunch before turning off at the turn off to the Peake repeater station ruins along public access route 13 (PAR13)

North Peake siding ruins –GPS- S28°01.20’, E135°48.53’

    Turn off to PAR13 –GPS- S28°08.57’, E135°49.29’

PAR13 runs 16 kms out to The Peake telegraph station ruins. It’s very rough and corrugated but ok for standard 4wd vehicles with care. It takes around 45mins to cover the 16 kms, slow for comfort!!! OK for of road trailers but not caravans.

Well worth the trip out though!!.

    Ruins –GPS- S28°04.61’, E135°54.37’

Built in 1871 and in use until 1891, Peake was a repeater station for the overland telegraph line. Nearly 140 years ago this would have been a truly isolated place!
Ruins include the repeater station, stables, police mans house, mess / kitchen building, blacksmith, men’s quarters and stores building.

The nearby copper mine dates from the early 1900’s.

An artesian spring flows from near the ruins and forms a small creek. There are great shady camping spots on the east side of this creek.

Great pics. Will have to get out that way one day. Especially loved the sunset (?) at your camp site with the orange clouds. Spectacular!

I didn't even look... I would guess so!!... notice the spare has already been pinched!!

BTW this was a hire car... I found the paper work nearby... wonder what the insurance excess would be on destroying a hire car?

I reckon heaps of hire Rav4's get trashed every year from tourists who've probably never driven off road and think they are REAL 4wds that can go anywhere and do anything.

MickL ~ great pics mate. Its trips like these that just reinforce my desire to go bush/camping more and more. Indeed, the shots of the campfire and bush oven immediately inspired my kids to start saying that they want to do that again soon! Oh, okay... if we have to 8) 8)

Yes we travelled solo on this trip, it's pretty tame stuff. The track is wider and in better condition than most people would expect. Plus with the cooler conditions there are plenty of other travellers out there.

Another thing is most of the area is covered by UHF repeaters.

I can make the GPS data available if people want to PM me their Email address (don't rush.. I haven't even had time to download it yet )

MTZ's went great, I've got nearly 5k kms on them now and will do a review on them when I rotate them.

                    Awesome write up Mick..

I am meant to be heading up that way next month but not sure on timing yet.

Also considering the MTZ's but not sure if they are going to fit without a lift. :?
