I thought I’d make separate posts for each part of our trip report for the benefit of those with lower download speeds.
I hope the moderators are happy with this, if not, I’m happy to merge them into one.
Anyway, too carry on….
Our next overnight stop was Oodnadatta, which is an historic Ghan railway town. All basic facilities are available. I guess the most famous attraction is the Pink Roadhouse, but the town also has a museum, a few historic buildings, historic rail and Afghan graves, and of course the Pub!!
Lynnie and Adam Plate own the Pink roadhouse and are a great source of information about anything in the area.
We stayed at the caravan park (behind the roadhouse) and had lunch in the diner.(Try the Oodnaburger… yum..)
Diesel was $2.11 lt
Site at the park was $17.50 (powered)

The famous Algebuckina bridge which spans the river Neales. Completed in 1892 by a work force of some 852 men. At 587 meters long it is the longest single span bridge in South Australia.
It really is quite an astonishing piece of engineering in its own right.
There are plenty of great camping spots in the area and by the water hole on the east side of the road.

Well worth the trip out though!!.
Ruins –GPS- S28°04.61’, E135°54.37’
Built in 1871 and in use until 1891, Peake was a repeater station for the overland telegraph line. Nearly 140 years ago this would have been a truly isolated place!
Ruins include the repeater station, stables, police mans house, mess / kitchen building, blacksmith, men’s quarters and stores building.
The nearby copper mine dates from the early 1900’s.
An artesian spring flows from near the ruins and forms a small creek. There are great shady camping spots on the east side of this creek.
