  • Outback SA Part 3

After some great camping at Peake it was time to double back and get back on the main track. First stop for the day was Warrina siding. There’s not much left and the ruins are in poor condition (due to being so close to the road I would say)

Across the track from the ruins are some relics to look at and a plague commemorating the Elder expedition which left Warrina in 1891 and traveled 6886km to Murchision River in WA, mapping 200,000 of inland Australia on the way.

    Warrina siding –GPS- S28°11.62’, E135°49.73’

We stopped at William Creek for lunch at the hotel. William Creek has all basic facilities and very expensive diesel!!
The pub is a mecca for tourists traveling the track. It’s inside walls are covered with all sorts of items left by visitors. Business cards, credit/key cards, student cards, stickers, hats, even undies…. You name it….

    William Creek –GPS- S28°54.40’, E136°20.32’

    Diesel- $2.31/lt

After a long lunch at the William Creek pub we headed off again with the next stop being Beresford siding. These ruins are in great condition, they are still roofed and one of the out buildings is intact. Nearby is a big dam, flowing spring, and water treatment plant.

Good spot for camping with some shady trees.

    Beresford –GPS- S29°14.32’, E136°39.50’

Coward Springs siding was our stop for the night (actually two nights, it’s a great camping spot) it has heaps of shady camping spots, very clean showers and toilets. Fire wood is included in the camping fee. Fire pits are provided at each site.

Camping cost $8 per person, per night.

The old engine drivers hut has been fully restored and contains visitor information and a few relics of the past.
The spring fed spa is awesome and I spent more than two ours in it!! It’s a constant 29°C

For a hot shower all you have to do is light a small fire under the rocket water heater, great stuff.
The wetland is worth a walk around too, plenty of wildlife around.

    Coward Springs –GPS- S29°24.12’, E136°48.83’

    To be continued…..

    Mick

MickL - Great pics... and some pretty artsy ones too. I especially like this one. Would look great on a wall.

Sort of like an optical illusion of a new photo on a very old wall.

    Well done. Superb

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

            Great pictures Mick!
Could you tell us something about your camera-settings? The colours look amazing? Is it the high ISO, your image processing or something else? I'm really curious!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, I'm glad you like the reports. I hope they get you longing to get out on your next trip/holiday!!

Could you tell us something about your camera-settings? The colours look amazing? Is it the high ISO, your image processing or something else? I'm really curious!
I am using a digital SLR set on ISO 200, 90% time I just leave it in landscape mode. It has a UV filter on it which really brings out the colours.

The photos should be encripted with date, time, ISO, speed, and F-stop if you are really keen to know and open them with your camera software.

Some of them were taken on my wifes Nikon compact camera.

The best bit of advice I can give is fit a UV filter, not only does it protect the lens, it cuts glare, stops that washed out look and brings out the natural colours.

How many more episodes and are you heading off on your Flinders Trip?

We are hoping to get away to the Flinders tomorrow or the day after.
I think I have enough pictures to do 4-5 more reports to cover the rest of the outback part of the trip.

But then there's the Flinders report....

A polarising filter also does wonders and helps bring out colours, not unlike good sunglasses.

I'm hoping to get two weeks out of this trip. We are going up through the Clare valley, Mt Remarkable NP, Quorn, Hawker, Wilpena Pound, Gammon Ranges/Arkaroola and as far north as Farina.

Maybe we'll see you up there, keep an eye out!!
