  • Willow Springs Station & Skytrek

Getting away from my “Outback SA” series of reports for a bit (still have a couple to go in that lot!!).

I thought I’d jump ahead and do a report on Willow Springs, Skytrek as I’m uploading the photos anyway.

Willow Springs station is located about 16 km north east of Wilpena Pound Resort in the Flinders Ranges. It is a working sheep station that has opened its doors to tourism (as so many have now).

Accommodation is available on the station ranging from bush camping to various self contained cottages and huts. Apart from the famous Skytrek 4wd track other activities include marked walking trails and general exploring of the stations sights such as natural springs and Aboriginal rock etchings.

The 4wd loop that is “Skytrek” is just over 60km long however only 26km is actually the low range track over Mt Caernarvon that is the true “Skytrek”, The balance is just general station tracks that range from good to a bit rough.

The warning on the supplied trek notes (very good notes at that) states “accessible to low range 4wd and experienced drivers only”

In reality any standard 4wd (with low range) and road tyres are suitable. There are only a couple of spots where you might have to take care in a stocker so as not to scrape the side steps or bum. It’s all about picking the right line.

Nothing hard about it and only very basic 4wd experience is required.

As the map shows we based our trip out of Wilpena where we were based at the camp ground.

I have a track log available for those who want it.

The notes stay to watch out for station vehicles and not to stop on the track and block it..... so here's me making a fool of myself.... ops:

There's a number of points of interest along the way as wll as plenty of photo stops!

This one is old Moxans hut, built around the turn of last century a station employee actually lived in it until the 1960's. It was restored by the Nissan Patrol club in 1993.

This is the view from the Pinnacle lookout. Looks like the area around Alice Springs.

Next is a crossing of the Bunkers Range Reserve. This is a private protected area and home of the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby.

Mt Caernarvon, at 920 metres high it is the highest place you can reach with a vehicle in the Flinders Ranges..... and oh what a view!!

I left a little something in the visitors box for the next Pradopointer to find!!

All in all a great day of driving. (took us 7hrs or so with stops and lunch)

It costs $55 and you have to start by 10am and be finished before dark)

    Mick,

You've got some great memories recorded there in your pics. You've inspired me to stop and take more pics than I do. Despite the fact that I might block the track once and a while ops:

Top report once again.... cheers

          Hi Mick,

          Great pics again.

Saw you (I think) leaving Wilpena (after getting some go-juice... we were having lunch out the back of the car waiting for the shuttle bus) but since I'd decided we wouldn't cross paths wasn't on the lookout, however I saw a big tyred Silver Prado with PradoPoint sticker disappearing out the carpark so guessed it might have been you. Didn't think of jumping on the radio to see if you had you 'ears on' either!

We decided against Skytrek as we'd done a couple of drives and the 5-6hrs quoted was too much for our enjoyment! Since we stop for lots of pics too, we would have taken 7hrs too! Was also worried about the grading (difficulty) of the track but it sounds like it was ok. Maybe another time!

          Cheers, Nige

Doh... would have been good to catch up.

I didn't see one sticker in 6000k's! Wouldn't mind a dollar for every Prado we saw on the road though... every second 4wd on the road.....

Nice report Mick. I've heard so much about Skytrek from several different people but haven't got there yet. I'll add it to my To Do list

Amazing colours you've captured in those images Mick What a wonderful landscape...

Am I missing something... the first visitor box images looks the same as the 2nd ops:
I'm guessing you left a PP sticker for the next Prado owner to stumble upon

Can't wait till we find the time to get out and explore... sooner rather than later I hope
                Cheers, Leon

Awesome write up Mick and some fantastic pictures. This is where I'm trying to get to before the end of the year with some work mates. We'll only be able to make it a midweek trip though...

Is it as steep as I have heard, or is this exaggerated somewhat? I've always wanted to head up to the Flinders. Skytrek and Wilpena Pound are the two things that I'm keen to check out asap.

                    Cheers,

It wasnt as steep as I was expecting, but definently low range. Some of the hills could be driven high range if it wasnt so choped up from people with high tyre pressures.

Best tip for skytreck is to lower your tyre pressures, it will be a much better ride.

Thanks for all the feedback guys

Is it as steep as I have heard, or is this exaggerated somewhat?
Depends on what you know I guess I thought it was exaggerated. There's only a couple of places where you loose sight of the track and only see sky
It's not a hardcore track, but is a good day out with some safe low range 4wheeling with no risk of damaging your vehicle.

Like I said, suitable for standard vehicles on standard tyres and some basic 4wd skills.

Re: Willow Springs Station & Skytrek

Had the weekend at Willow Springs and Skytrek staying at Moxams Hut - the newer one though. Tracks were in pretty good condition except for a couple of washouts and ruts on some steep ascents. Thats where I got the nose of the Prado airborne - just a little. Guess I choose the wrong line :?. Stock tyres let down to 24 psi but raised suspension was really needed as was frontal clearance. Being a novice I think I was saved by the technology. Views and panoramas are stunning and well worth the trip. If your thinking about the Flinders Ranges - do Skytrek.
